I've been thinking about the thickness of necks lately and would love to learn from you all.
Apart from comfort, what are the benefits of having a thicker neck? What are the drawbacks?

I had thought a smaller neck would better because you could get in and really dominate it. However, after reading this forum I learned many people prefer thicker necks as they tend to cut down on hand strain. This combined with the fact many of Fenders Artists models (SRV, JM, KWS to name a few) advertise thicker necks makes me think there is something to playing with a thicker neck. Any opinions in this matter would be appreciated.

Hopefully the one single thing that you've gotten out of this is that it simply depends on the individual. Some folks like really thin necks (try a dual truss rod Rickenbacker some day) and some folks like baseball bats. Personally, I like the "modern C" best myself. Like others I can play just about any size (except those "deep V's...I HATE those things) but it simply comes down to what I like the best. It's really just a comfort issue more than anything. BTW...I have rather smallish hands too.

As with all things of this nature, try a few and let your own hands and heart decide what's best for you :-)

Peace,
Jim

Thanks for all the replies, they are much appreciated.
Armed with this knowledge, I decided to audition some guitar necks. I tried everything including a JM, '62 HR, SRV, (sadly I couldn't find a KWS) which are all spec'd with "larger" necks. After playing all these, I found I was really taken by the '62 Vintage HR and it's large, clublike neck. However, I don't know if this due to comfort or just the novelty difference of the '62's neck being so large (someone from this forum mentioned it felt almost like a gibson and I agree with that sentiment). Any thoughts on this matter?
Questions also related to this discussion include:
1) Can anybody identify any drawbacks to having a larger neck?
2) Anybody have any objective guidelines when choosing a neck or is it a decision based purely on comfort?
