SO I am wanting to convert my 1990 MIJ Strat into a hardtail. I nevwr use the tremolo and it tends to just get in the way. So is it as simple as just turning the bar counter clockwise and thats it? DO I need a block to put in the back? Sorry for the newbie question, just don't want to mess her up, shes my second fav guitar! Thanks in advance for the help.

Personally I would do this:

Just unscrew the trem arm. Put in 5 springs. Loosen the strings slightly. Screw in the 2 screws on the claw a couple of turns. Retune and see if the back of the bridge is sitting on the body. If not loosen the strings again and give those 2 screws another turn or 2. Retune and check the back of the bridge again. Once you are satisfied with the back of the bridge being down on the body do a setup (adjust the neck, string height and intonation). You will probably have to adjust pickup height too.

Chet you make it sound so easy man! The 2 screws on the claw you are talking about, where are those? I have only been playing 9 months and this is my first attempt to mod a guitar, but if I can do it myself and not pay a tech id rather do it myself.

Look in the back of the guitar. You will see the 2 screws holding the metal plate looking thing. That is the claw.

i see, so tighten those up and tune, then if needed give them a few more turns. You think 5 springs is definitely going to be needed? if so ill have to get 2 more of those.

3 will be fine. My preference would be to use 5.

I am going to get 2 more just in case. About the pickup height adjustment, is that a given or just something that may need to be done. Thanks for your help man.

Pickup height adjustment may have to be done. It would depend on your string height.

What are the pros and cons of both methods?
