Nikininga I remember that guy Wilco from a series that ran here in the 80s called Rock School that was like an eight part series that showed different musical styles. I know it had to be played in the UK as I believe it was made there as the three musicians were all British and the guitarist was a girl who was just a great player. Do you know the show I am talking about.

Ha! I remember that one. That takes me back - and dates both of us too, StrayCat!

Yep, it was a BBC program if I remember right (or was it Channel 4?). It was where I learnt that a pedal can be a musical term too, as well as a box you step on.

Anyhow. Since you mentioned Pete Townshend here's a nice piece of rhythm playing. No need for the rhythm guitarist to stay in the shadows!

Ah, I remember Rock School... for some reason it's become mixed up with Red Dwarf in my mind.

I think once Bootsy Collins appeared on the show... heh. He blew our little Aussie teenage minds...

I never saw it, I did see a few red dwarf episodes though. Perhaps that explains why I play like Lister

I think some of the best lead players are the ones that have the ability to drive a song with their playing. Anyone can go off on a tangent and put together a solo (not anyone, but I am trying to prove a point) but it takes someone special to be able to put together a solo that STAYS with the song and doesn't interrupt it. If you can keep the song going and not interrupt anything, it is all good in my book

My main instrument is the drums, but I love playing guitar, bass, and piano too. I may be getting off topic just a bit here but, like someone else here in this thread said, I don't think that learning alot of music theory is essential to be able to play some classic rock, country, or pop. But, to really become a great musician, it is mandatory. It is always painfully obvious when someone has no official training. Of course there are many, many exceptions to this, and I'm sure there are many guitarists here that are great with only a minimal amount of knowlege of music theory, and I'm certainly not trying to offend anyone, it's just an observation I've made throughout my life and career as a musician. Every person I've met who says music theory is unnessesary or gets in the way of true creativity, etc. is always someone who has minimal knowledge of music theory. In fact, most of the drum teachers I've known will not accept a student who has not been in school band. The point to all this is: learning music theory correctly will take care of rythym and lead playing simutaneously, and great musicianship will emerge from a balanced variety of learning. I've always said that it takes three things to become a great musician: talent, alot of hard work, and intellegence. Every great musician I've known had all three.

i started in a three piece so i had to play both parts. by doing so you learn that "lead" guitar is really just rhythym guitar, just played differently. you play single notes or a few at a time so you don't have the chords to hinder what most would call speed. but the lead parts are nothing without the other parts. so if you can't play rhytym then you bassically got nothin'.
