Hey everyone! I know I look like a newb but I have been reading these boards for a few years now and I can't thank you all enough for all of the advice. You have helped me answer so many questions without you even knowing it...so it is much appreciated.
Here is my question:
I just got a used Classic series 60's strat MIM. I don't like how close the high E string is to the edge of the fretboard. I know this seems to be a common problem for many strats...mostly due to string spacing issues.
I have another strat that I built from parts earlier this year and it has the Callaham V/N trem unit in it and I love it. However, this time I don't feel like spending the money right now to go the Callaham route again. I am wondering if I can grab a newer (2006 or later) HWY one trem unit and drop it in my Classic 60's. I know the HWY one has the narrow string spacing with the vintage mounting so I think this could be a possible fix for my E string too close to the edge of the fretboard problem. This should work no problem right?

The only thing that is confusing me is that in some places I see that the Vintage mounting is 2 3/16 and in others I see 2 7/32 . I know that is only a very minor difference in measurement but I didn't know what is the right one or if they are indeed different.
Thanks so much guys.
There are some smart folks on here and I appreciate any feedback you can give me.

Shawn

PS. I know that there are other issues that can cause this problem...like neck allignment or nut probelms. This doesn't seem to be the problem however.

Welcome!

Not only is there that minor variation in the string spacing but it will be also be there proportionately with the mounting screws spacing too.

As you've said yourself (paraphrased), these little variations may or may not make a difference. Further, you know there are other factors which can cause problems.

It seems your line of reasoning and your cognizance of antecedent conditions are right where they should be for this task. Having said that, I can only base my response solely on my experience but I want to make this perfectly clear, this is NOT an 'absolute, in-stone' answer. As I've just said to someone else, all guitars are different and obviously, I can't examine your's, hands-on. The bottom line is that I personally have yet to have any significant problems with such minute measurement substitutions. What is, "insignificant" then? I honestly don't remember them if there ever were any.

Thanks a lot for the input. I really don't see why this mod would pose a problem. However, has anyone here done this modification or something similar in order to bring those strings away from the edge of the fretboard?
