Im thinking of replacing the neck on my 06 american deluxe..has anyone experienced scalloped frets with or without really large frets.. is there any downside as to how the neck feels for a funk/comping situation?
thnx

You need a really light touch. If you press down the string goes sharp. They are kind of fun though.

light strings and a delicate touch are the deal with scalloped frets and it's extremely easy to "go sharp" once you get into the scallops. They really are more of a "speed" thing, why on earth would you want them for Funk?

scalloped ones won't make that much of a difference but will give u some trouble in the beginning. As others said, it kinda gets u to that half tone up notes when u press just a bit hard. As u improvise ur playing, u will adapt to the fretboard and play without catching the sharp notes.

As for the speed, well it can give ease to pick and slide those twangy blues and funk phrasings but again u have to adapt ur fingers for it. U MIGHT FEEL A BIT UNCOMFORTABLE WHEN U PLAY ON NORMAL FRETS AFTER THE SCALLOPED ONES. but again its ur call...whatever u feel comfortable. PEACE

Here's some scalloped frets:

I guess what we're really talking about on this thread is a scalloped fingerboard between the frets.

It's not a fretboard, it is a picture of the moon rising over the desert, with telephone poles along the road. :)

I presume you mean a scalloped fingerboard.

The last thing I'd want is a scalloped fingerboard for Funk type playing. I'd surely want a level fingerboard under the strings when sliding into and out of those 9th chords and whatever augmentations supporting them. I can't see how with a fist full of rapidly changing chords and their abstracts, one's intonation could be consistently flawless with equal pressure from each finger on each fret every time. As always, YMMV.

Thank you "Captain Obvious" (or CaptainS Obvious in this case). :D Yes we all knew he meant a scalloped fretboard rather than scalloped frets and offered input appropriately based on that knowledge.

We must always endeavor to be accurate to avoid any ambiguity.

Me I play to heavy handed for a scollop fretboard but if you mod your tuning some it can be made to work. I just don't like the feel.

A sight of much pain in these parts. My customclassic is heading that way.

I see too, the scalloping has already started with those divots in the fingerboard.
