i recently purchased a strat body on ebay for my latest project. i was hoping to find a seafoam green run-of-the-mill alder fender strat body for a decent price. what i got was a little more than i bargained for. the body itself is a "genuine fender replacement" body, mint in the factory box.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :IT&ih=001

looking at the picture of the front of the strat i figured that the small "hole" near the input jack route was probably some sticker or a piece of packing debris. once i recieved the body i found that it is infact a hole. on the back of the body is a large hole/routing below the tremelo cavity. it's as wide as the trem cavity but it's not as tall. it almost looks like a cavity routed for a battery compartment but it's much too big. the routing also goes deeper around the small hole that penetrates the body as if to suggest that it's meant to house a switch or a pot in addition to something much larger. another thing that baffles me is the fact that there's no hole connecting that routing to any other compartment in the body.

that was only my first surprise. i took off the pickgaurd to inspect the trem/control routes and i found a small circuit board sitting in it's own routing below the neck and middle pickups. i'm assuming that this is some sort of mid-boost circuit. the battery clip that powers this board was fed through a hole in the body that leads to an elongated route in the trem spring compartment (just big enough for a 9v battery).

on the one hand, i feel let down and decieved because none of this was mentioned in the auction. all i was looking for was a nice standard strat body that i could use and abuse. on the other hand i'm totally stoked to have all of these routes in place and (at least half of) the components for all these little gadgets that i've never used before.

so, my questions are...

does anyone know what model of strat this body is from?

it says it's genuine fender but as far as i know, fender doesn't make replacement necks/bodies to sell after market. anyone know where it was made?

any idea what wood was used? (i'm thinking alder/ash)

and more importantly...anyone have any clue what that mystery compartment was used for?

i'll try to throw some pictures up once i get out of work...assuming that i can be the thread clock. till then, check out the auction link...maybe it'll help?

This body sounds just like my Clapton Strat body.

By the way the color looks more like sonic blue in the picture.

Is it really seafoam green?

it's funny that you mention that 'cause i also thought the same thing. i figured it for sonic blue but under some lighting it has a mellow green hue to it. as far as the clapton strat, i don't think i've ever seen one in this color. more importantly, i've never seen the extra switch hole/route behind the bridge.

I totally missed the part about the whole. My bad, but it did get me thinking. I know that Pete Townsend plays a red Claton Strat that has an extra knob right about the same place as the one in picture. The extra knob is for a special accustic pickup. I can't remember the name of the pick up.
