Hi guys, I know this is a strat forum but lately Ive been listening to some of John5's work. I previously never had the time of day for the genre but I have found massive respect for his abilities as a player with regard to his flexibility, and someone who loves his fender guitars. I came across this interview and I really loved it.. He is actually a nice guy- I know his style isnt for everyone but check it out- apparently he owns a near mint broadcaster too!!

One thing I have discovered is whoa.. this guy can shred well!! and what an awesome and SIMPLE shred lesson!! its a long vid, but he gives a great lesson I think you owe yourselves to watch, he talks about his guitars, why he chooses a bigsby over a floyd rose, why he chooses to play a tele and why he is soo into vintage fenders. This interview is really interesting!!

I also like the advice for learner guitarists too:

That was quite a good interview. He seems like a very intelligent dude. I didn't realize that he worked with Lynard Skynard and K.D. Lang.

I totally enjoyed watching him play. He is an incredable shredder. Its nice to see a new and exciting face promoting the Fender name.

I totally agree, John5 is an incredible musician who does break the rules but makes everything he does work. I find him to be a genuine guy as well. Thanks for sharing the video.

Yeah, A super nice guy! He did a Fender University Clinic in my home town several months back. I think russianracehorse went to the same clinic in Texas. Anyway, the guy has amazing technique! Oddly enough, his appearance doesnt really seem to match his persona. Just goes to show, You cant judge a book by its movie! Doh! I mean cover.

I knew John back in the late 80's when he was still in Detroit. His real name is John Lowery and he was in a band named Pepperland. Believe it or not, his band opened for my old band (Stark Ravin') at Harpo's Concert theatre a few times and we also competed against them in Ted Nugent's Whiplash Bash Contest a few times. lol! He was a very soft spoken, friendly guy.

It's nice to see someone from the "Old Days" that broke away from the club scene in Detroit and make something of themselves.

I think John had the right idea in marketing himself and not tying himself down to one band. It's clear that he has grown alot since those days because I don't remeber him standing out as the great guitarist he is now.
Just goes to show you that practice and determination will get you from playing at crappy bars in Detroit to giving interviews in hottubs with beatiful woman around you. LOL!

:D

Thats it, bugger the fame and glory- you know you made it when you are talking guitars in a hot tub with two brunnettes. You cant get much more rock and roll than that- or perhaps a pizza, a hot brunnette talking guitars asking about your mint broadcaster and a hotter brunnette next to you.. what more could you want?

Awesome player and extremely talented musician. I think it is awesome for folks to see that guys like John 5 are fluent in all types of genres. I am a true metal head myself and I love just down right brutal metal riffs, but I have much respect for a good few country music guitarists and especially blues guys. See, we can all get along....lol.

Blertles nice find. Johhny 5 looks like he must suck as a player yet he is one of the best players out there today. The guy has super human chops and I can remember some years back reading how he would go out to a store and buy a bunch of instructional videos when on the road and wood shed all night or even find someone giving lessons. He is truly a master of the telecaster in a very hard rock metal way. Just a phenomenal player and a cool guy. Thanks for the great find as I really enjoyed it.

All good mate- he is a great role model and also a killer guitarist. He deserves more cred for sure :)

I think his advice for learners and aspiring session guitarists is valuble :)

John5 has been one of my favourite guitarists for about 8 or 9 years. Its humbling that even after all this time he is still so dedicated to an instrument that he was learning since he was 7yrs old, hes like a kid in a sweet shop when talking about guitars. It is also some what inspiring to listen to him talk or play, and its amazing how people are only just finding out about him after nearly 20yrs in the music business. :)
