Hi!

I bought a new Standard Strat two months ago, with a little problem of "fret noise" (specially 3rd and 4th string on 9th fret).

In order to avoid it, I have changed the strings, using 0,10 - 0, 46 mm instead of 0.9 - 0,42 , increased the curvature of the neck, and setting the bridge height a little higher.

The result of all of this is that I have avoided almost at all the fret noise, but the "prize" has been strings too high for my taste. I really would like to play with no fret noise and with strings closer to he fingerboard.

Do you have any suggestion to help me?

(Thank you in advance and excuse me for my English)

If your trying to get them as low as possible without buzzing, you'd be better off to take it to a luthier and see what they can do, they'll probably see that a fret dressing is in order.

If the strings are too high for the action you like, why not back down the float on the bridge? The buzz you're talking about was from the truss rod. The truss rod controls like from the top down to the 9th fret. I read that and I know it's true and remember it from messing around with my own guitar. So, you don't need the bridge high, bro' it was a pure truss rod thing. You can lower down the bridge to factory or a little under and get a lower action and it's not primarily going to impact those frets up 1-9.

Music shop luthiers are around selling fret dressings all around for like $100, but I don't buy into doing too much of that. It's like auto places where you always need a new air filter. Maybe they don't really do it, and if they do maybe they're not so good at it, and anyway it's going to wear on the guitar. Your guitar doesn't fret out on bends or do any of that stuff that means your frets are truly screwed up. That's the way I look at it myself anyway. I've got just a little bit of fret rattle on my Highway One frets 5-7, audible if the amp's off or very low. I'm pretty sure it will diminish when I put on my next set of strings (10s instead of 9s) and if not I'll go get the allen wrench and do the truss rod. What I won't do is float the bridge higher. The bridge height maybe has some spillover effect up high, but mainly it's controlling down low.
