Hi all,

:?:

Just wondering if little pit marks from the strings and maybe finger nails is normal for a month old guitar. I play it for a few hours every day. Is it because I press too hard on the finger board? Fender said it's not normal but the GC saleman/manager said I need to clean and condition the finger board. It's a rosewood board on an American Deluxe. Any suggestions? Is it normal? Thanks in advance.

I think you'll be more likely to see that kind of wear on a rosewood board earlier than a maple as rosewood is softer and usually not finished like maple is. It's a good idea to condition the wood (I use lemon oil on my rosewood strats,) but wear marks are normal and nothing to worry about - it's what gives your instrument it's own character...

Trimming those nails might not be a bad idea. It'll also be more comfortable. Doesn't sound likely that you would even be able to press hard enough to make a scar in the fretboard. My guitar is 8 years old now and it has rosewood, but I've never conditioned the fretboard (just scraped the gunk off every once in awhile), it's stained from sweat and the fretboard edges are rolling some, but there are no scars in it anywhere. It get's played every day and put through abuse most people would cringe at. The maple (neck itself) seems to scar real easy, but not the rosewood.

All of my guitars except one have rosewood fingerboards and none of them are showing any real wear. The rosewood does have a texture to it and maybe that is what you are seeing. I also use lemon oil to condition my rosewood boards. My 22 year old maple neck guitar does show some wear which is normal for maple. That is why the '57 Strat went to a rosewood board in '62, rosewood typically shows less wear. Try a little lemon oil and see if it looks better, good luck...
