Everything above is true except the body finish (as rich and beautiful as it is) is NOT nitro, it's poly (on mine anyway). Mine is also one-piece alder (which doesn't seem to be touted anywhere). I know for sure the body finish is poly after swabbing an area inside the tremolo cavity with lacquer thinner AND acetone--neither melted the film. The neck is nitro, though. Anyone else have the same experience?

Cheers,
Wayne

Way to go Wayne !! Why did you have to meddle around and be curious and ruin MY day!!! Thanks alot!!

Just kidding!!

Actually that was some good investigating!! After reading your comment I called Fender Customer Service. I talked to Sean about your comment and he said he would talk to the marketing people and call me back. Well he did call me back with some "bad" news. The guitar originally was to have a nitro finish but they could not get it to look right(or something like that, I was walking a dog when he called me back and could not write down what he told me). The marketing people decided to change the finish to a poly finish without telling anyone (except the people who finish the bodies I guess!) and did not change the finish spec on the final spec sheet. Whoops!!!!! The body is alder although it was advertised as being ash in the GC catalog. I forgot to ask Sean about the finish on the neck.

I am kinda disappointed!! For the price it was sold for, I kinda figured the guitar was not a Custom Shop(which GC advertised it as, but they did post a notice in their store saying it was not Custom Shop built after I bought it :( !). I do not know much about nitro finishes so maybe that price point should have been a clue about that also. Oh well!

I like the chocolate sunburst color. I am a beginner player and it sounds good to me so I will probably keep it  !

Sean told me that this guitar is considered an American Vintage series. Is this guitar worth twice as much as my American Standard? (I know that is a loaded question!!!)

Wayne-was the pickup selector switch on your guitar a three way switch? According to the specs it should have been (with an extra five way switch in the case candy). Mine had a five way switch installed and five way switch in the case candy. Just curious.

Thanks again for being curious Wayne.
Chris

Hey Chris,

Sorry 'bout that. Don't shoot the messenger.

Apart from the perhaps unscrupulous marketing, This gutar is a gem--it's very well balanced, sounds great, and rivals CS models I've played costing twice as much. The neck is tight in the pocket and has a 3/16" rosewood slab (not a chintzy lamination like many production strats and will endure several fret-jobs). The neck is flat-sawn and has perfectly symetrical cathedralling with the apex dead-center in the middle of the back of the neck all the way down (making it likely to remain very stable over the years against the elements). I will replace the nut with bone, though. Mine DID come with the 5-way switch installed--which happens to be what I prefer.

Ed Treat from Fender called me today to inform me a resolution to this issue is in the works and will likely be to either: A) swap the body, or B) trade in the entire guitar at an authorized Fender repair shop. He said some folks have opted to keep the one they have as-is (apparently he's had conversations like this with others). Ed couldn't give me an ETA on the fulfillment of this. I have to say, though, I'm impressed with the support Fender has provided so far--pleasantly surprised.

I'll let you know anything else I learn.

Cheerio,
wayne[/quote]

Wayne,
So, Fender is willing to swap out the body? For ash and nitro finish? I have #40, which is still a very nice Strat and was sold on the fact that it had a nitro finish by my local GC salesman Joe. What to do next?

The rep told me they are considering either swapping out the body OR replacing the entire guitar--nothing is confirmed yet. He said he would get back to me as soon as the decision has been made on how Fender plans to proceed to resolve this--he's simply a cust rep, someone in product marketing is going to make that decision.

As for the ash body, that was never spec'd for this run (that was a mistake in GC's copy). If you look back in this thread I posted the Fender official specs, which included nitro finish and alder body--not ash.

Hope this helps.
Wayne

No worries about that mate!!!!

Your description of your guitar sounds like you were talking about mine!!! The look of the grain on the back of the neck, the fit, just like mine!

Sean from Fender Customer Service said to test if the finish is poly or nitro, take off the pickguard (or trem cover) and put some acetone on the finish and see if the finish is affected. I took off my trem cover also and tested with acetone and the acetone evaporated on my finish. I was offered to get the body refinished(but not to replace the whole guitar-lucky you!!!) but Sean said the new finish will look like a regular sunburst not the Chocolate burst-which is why the finish was changed to poly in the first place.

I brought the guitar into the GC where I bought it to have them look at it and they thought it was a nitro finish and were surprised it was not.
Hmmmm... it sounds like there were MANY errors in the GC copy!

I agree that Fender has been VERY good about this to me!! Thanks Sean!

Chris

wlhuck-Have you heard anymore info about this? I am wondering how Fender is going to resolve this. I am waiting on a callback from Sean. I do like the look of the Chocolate Burst so I might have to be talked into getting the body refinished in a nitro sunburst. :?

I have number 29. I was just wondering what did Fender ultimately decide to do to rectify the poly finish on the body. Did they trade out bodies or refinish them? Did anybody take them up on it? Thanks!

I recently got one and it's superb. A modern playability take on a 59 with larger frets and 9.5 radius.
I love it.
