Why its a valid point. Most if not all nuts are cut usually for .012, .015, .020, .030, .042 and .054 or somewhere around that. I'm pretty convinced it varies manufacturer to manufacturer. Note .010 gauge nut files are quite hard to come by most sets start at .012". I was recently instructed to use the nut saw for those two slots by a very knowledgable fellow on another thread. Their purposely cut big to allieviate nut bind a couple of thou on the width hardly matters. Its the angle of the slot front to back that primarily creates a good sounding nut.

Seriously how many people can you see walking around with "NINJA NUTS" plastered over the front of their Tshirt. You'd get arrested.

I was looking at putting a fender lsr roller nut on one of my guitars, but then I read that it is designed for string gauges .008 - .056. My question is does anyone know of any top of the line nuts that work well with larger strings? (i.e. .010 or .012) I've heard of Earvana but have no experience with them at all. thanks for your help and input!

Hi Ryan: I feel completely ashamed of hijacking your very reasonable thead. Apologies - and thank you for being good humored about it.

So a serious answer to your question:

LSR roller nuts are made with a degree of tollerance. Though those guitars typically are fitted with 0.009s or 0.010s I've regularly heard of people using 0.011s without any difficulties.

Here on the Forum we've heard contrary opinions on how they perform with 0.012s. Some people do it without problems; for others this is where binding issues start to occur.

So if you are thinking about using one with 0.011s it should be fine - above that, not necessarily.

However. From my limited experience of 'em, LSRs are not the ultimate answer to pitch return issues. They mostly work fine, but probably no better than a well cut nut of the ordinarly type. Fitting an LSR involves permanent irreversable changes to the top of your fingerboard. In my completely personal view, I wouldn't bother with it.

Be clear, a solution to a different problem; but I get a genuine intonation improvement at low frets with my Ninja Nut. So I'd warmly recommend one of those - or Earvana's or Buzz Feiten's equivalent.

Cheers - C
