I was looking at putting a fender lsr roller nut on one of my guitars, but then I read that it is designed for string gauges .008 - .056. My question is does anyone know of any top of the line nuts that work well with larger strings? (i.e. .010 or .012) I've heard of Earvana but have no experience with them at all. thanks for your help and input!

Hi,

I've seen 11's on a strat with lsr nut and it had no problems. Also my deluxe strat has an lsr and I have 10's on it with no issues.

At one point in time I ran 12's on my 1999 LSR equipped AD Fat Strat. (what they now call HSS) It was at that time dedicated as a detuned Eb guitar. I never noticed any nut issues during that period although the intonation required a little tweaking likely due to the out-of-norm gauge and tension.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Think about your question, it will take strings from .008 to .056

The word between comes to mind here!!!!

Earvana's are ok. Their compensation is very run of the mill though. Idealy compensation needs to be measured seperately for each guitar. You will notice a difference using a comnpensated nut, it wont be long before you start to notice the problems with the generic ones too. Thats the main reason I dont sell them. I literaly put a weeks worth of work into measuring a strats needed offsets. Designed and carved a nut. Made a template for it and knocked a few more up. one day I decided to check a template made one in another guitar and it was horrible. I rechecked the measurements of the nut, surely enough they were accurate to the 100th of a millimeter.
What a compensated offset nut does is adjust intonation at both ends of the guitar. Great for low end chord work, get up round the 7th/8th fret and things can get a little wonky if your not absolutely bang on. Phil Hartley charges £130 to have his funkynut installed. I initialy thought that was a bad price. Now I cant see how he does it for the money.

The two pictures above show the one I made for 3 saddle telecasters. Those are actualy on Ceri's guitar. The telecaster nut is the only one I'm half satisfied with. It did improve low end intonation no end and isnt too noticable round the middle of the fretboard.

Heres the strat one

In conclusion. If your thinking of low end compensation because you genuinely hear a problem then try a earvana. Please stay intouch and let me know how you go on with it. I'll help anyway I can.
If you prefer the look of the earvana's direct lsr replacement (I think it looks far better than the lsr), try one by all means. You may be pleasantly suprised. You could however have someone make you a regular nut to that size.

Just noticed how beautifull that spalting on Ceri's maple fingerboard is. Who says customshop get all the best woods.

Yes, I thought that neck looked familiar! :D

What I want to know - when do the "Ninjanut Official Endorser" T-shirts hit the street? 8)

I've some old tshirts i used to use for wiping the oil off the cars dipstick. You can have one of them if you like mate.

Seriously how many people can you see walking around with "NINJA NUTS" plastered over the front of their Tshirt. You'd get arrested.

Very seriously: howzabout a photo of me shaking Joe Bonamassa's hand with I LIKE NINJA NUTS emblazoned across my front?

He'd probably ask if they were salted or dry roasted To which you could sneeze "cashew".

This is getting very surreal.

Seriously though you should offer your services. Your paint/body repairs are easily as good as any I've seen. Paul reed smith would likely be just another small time builder instead of the megabuilder hes become, if he hadnt approached Carlos Santana in the same manner.

That would be a nice gig for ya, touching up a few of Joe's bashed up LP's.

I vote for NINJA NUTS shirt. Do it man. To avoid some troubles you can include that Tele close up photo. Tshirt transfer paper + tshirt + 20 min of work = inexpensive advertizing!

Ha - yeah, I bet Joe doesn't get enough people offering to work on his guitars for him...

I like the idea of the nut pic on the front of the T though. I can hear the conversation now:

"Hey man, what's that crazy looking nut on the front of your shirt?"

"Well Joe, glad you asked. Let me tell you about this guy..."

Cheers - C

After all, it pays to advertise...

S'OK though: Daniel has told me how to go about it (above). You never know, I might just do it...
