I have a min 90s american standard strat with a rosewood fret neck. a mishap with a german shepard took a bit of a chunk out of the neck and put a good size crack around the damaged area. i may try to sand off the finish and see if i can do any wood repair and then seal it back up again, but im not confident in my ability to fix this such that it wouldnt bother me anymore. what are my options for new necks? if i am forced into repairing it myself, what is the finish on the neck?

thanks

Maybe your local repair wizzard/handyman.
The finish is probably polyurethane.

Sounds like a very unfortunate project you have ahead of you.

Ok, here's your "to-do" list:

1. KILL THE DOG (he has no right to hang around anymore)

2. Grab your camera and take a few pics of that neck and post'em here on the forum so we can see just how bad that damage is.

3. Check to make sure the dog is still dead. It won't do to find him still breathing.

4. Hop back on the forum and see if you have any responses to the pics you posted earlier.

You might have to replace your neck if it's not structurally sound anymore, or if it just so happens your not into relic'd guitar parts.

thanks for the replies. i shouldnt blame the dog really. it was my fault for leaving my things around where i know he plays.

at any rate ill post pics if i get home before the forum closes for the night. im likely being too anal about this, but i try to keep my guitars in tip top condition. because of that, i have no problem at all buying a new neck. i just havent found anyone that really sells them. i dont want a knock off, and i understand that fender doesnt really sell necks seperately. i cant imagine im the first strat player in 50 years to have this problem though...

As usual, check eBay. There are tons of parts-mongers on there that'll sell you a genuine Fender neck.

But Leo Fender designed his guitars so you could replace damaged parts. There must be a way to buy a new neck from Fender.
Try contact them and explain your problem.

It would be a cold day in hell before Fender sold somebody an authentic neck. Probably the only way to get one is if your guitar were still under warranty. If you can't find one used or something like that, well your out of luck.

Can't really blame them though, with soo many Fender copies out there, if everybody had access to a Fender neck, you wouldn't be able to tell a real fender from a phony.

Business as usual.

i found on ebay last night to be almost the exact neck i damaged, so i jumped on it. it is without tuners, and while i could take the tuners off my current neck, im thinking about going a different direction. the neck is off a 2005 american series. would schaller locking tuners fit on this?

yep. i got shaller locking tuners on mine, but i bought it like this but they are exactly like the normal shaller/fender ones except the locking screw on the back. make sure since your buying new anyway to get the german shallers and not the new ping schallers that fender is useing. nothing wrong with the ping ones but you will be much happier with the german ones. :)

oh, and if you want vintage tuners then you can get conversion kits for them.. there not expensive at all. i cant post on fdp because of firewall or something or i would have tol you there.. good luck!

So the proceedures posted on the fender site for submitting pictures and info to verify the damage to an orignal fender guitar in order to get replacement parts is useless?

From this page
http://www.fender.com/support/faqs.php#q7

Does Fender sell any replacement guitar necks and bodies?

In some instances Fender may authorize an accommodation sale of a guitar neck or body through one of our Authorized Fender Service Centers, but only as a direct replacement for a neck or body which is either defective, or damaged beyond repair. An authorization will not be made to simply meet a players desire to purchase a replacement for any other reason.

To see if your instrument qualifies under Fender's criteria for neck and body replacement, you will need to bring your guitar to an Authorized Fender Service Center for an evaluation by an Authorized technician along with a series of photographs showing:

1. The entire front of the instrument.
2. The entire back of the instrument.
3. A close-up photograph of the headstock.
4. A close-up photograph or a lead pencil rubbing of the neckplate showing either serial number or other Fender markings.

An Authorized technician would determine a verification of the authenticity of the instrument as well as the need for either a replacement neck or body at that time. The Service Center would then send the photographs and appropriate documentation to our technical support staff here at Fender for consideration of the request.

If approved by Fender, an authorization for the sale of a new neck or body would then be made, and the Service Center would place an order for the replacement part at that time. The new neck or body most closely matching the specific parts ordered would then be released and invoiced to the Service Center. (Please understand that exact replacements may no longer be available, depending on the age and model of your instrument and a substitution may be required). You would then arrange between yourself and the Service Center the necessary repairs needed to complete your instrument.

All costs involved, including the cost of the replacement part, shipping, insurance, and repairs are solely the responsibility of the customer.
