Hey. I'm pondering what to buy as a second guitar. I like the feel of my '98 Squier Affinity, so I'm leaning towards a Strat. However I really want the extra oompf of a bucker for versatility. I will soon get the Vox VT50 and will use that as my amp.

I have several questions for you people -

Are these guitars generally speaking good?

I've read the humbucker is a little too bright. Comments?

What about the tremolo?

I need to downtune to Drop D and Eb occasionally. Any possible problems this might cause?

Will Fender pickguards fit these?

Thanks :)

I used to own an MIM fat with a floyd rose bridge. I sold it 9 years ago. I'll put it this way, it is sorely missed and i'm still pining for it like a cat that lost its kittens. it was that good. The only pickup I liked was the neck- but remember that pickups can be swapped out. Im going to buy another floyd strat, and when I do im swapping the singles for texas specials, and the humbucker for a SD Pearly Gates Plus.

In my opinion I think the MIM are great guitars :D

Also remember that you can block the bridge, or even just add heavier strings to the back and screw the trem screws down to the body (on MIM; 6 screw type trems) to aid in drop and alternate tunings. Things like this are a nightmare with a floating Floyd type trem but easier to deal with with vintage style trems.

I had one of these guitars and I put a DiMarzio Super Distortion Humbucker in it. I really liked that pickup in that guitar. It does make that switch position much louder, so if thats a problem for you the idea may not be a good one. You also lose the Stratty sound in the Middle/Bridge combo setting. You may be able to coil tap it with some success. I didnt use the trem on that guitar, so I installed extra springs and let the bridge sit flush against the body. Overall I had very good luck with that guitar.
