Hi--new member here--glad to 'aboard'! I have a 1987 MIA 'American Series [Amer. Std] Strat' and would like to know what the 'fret width' specs are on it. Thank you for reading this and for any help you can give to me.

Welcome to the Forum. To be honest to you, I do not know the answer to that question, but there are others here at the Forum that do. I do like those late 80's Stratocasters an I too am interested in the answer.

You mean the size of the fret?

Medium Jumbos like you'll find on todays models. Not sure what the actual width measurement is though.

Hi--thanks for your help. Yeah I kinda know that they are 'medium jumbo`s' but I really would like to know the exact width measurement--is it .100" or wider or narrower than .100"?!?--and i`d really like to know the exact width. I want to refret a SG that I have w/ frets just like what`s on my Strat so I`d really like to know the exact fret width of my Strat. BTW: Fender Customer Service really couldn`t answer my question as they can not research a 1987 MIA Strat which was kinda disappointing. Thanks again.

Hi wntbtw: Forum user Ozzy asked a similar question and I used my digital calipers to measure the frets on my 2005 Am Strat for him. The results I got were:

2.69mm / 0.106" wide
1.1mm / 0.043" high

However. Your 1987 Strat may differ significantly. I've never heard which maker's fret wire Fender use, or whether they have used the same wire over decades or changed sometimes.

So the only way you are going to find out for sure is to accurately measure yours. If you want to know for purposes of fret replacement then measurement of the actual frets in question is essential.

Any decent luthier/tech will have digital calipers. Or you can buy them quite cheaply - Google to source them or any good tool shop will stock them.

Measuring fret height is the one situation where Stewart-MacDonald's digital calipers are actually useful. They have a tiny slot at the far end for this purpose. In all other respects they are identical to regular calipers and unfortunately they cost about three times as much:

Measuring my frets for Ozzy was the first time I found a use for that very expensive slot!

Cheers - C
