I think it's best to stay away from ordering, unless you absolutely have to. I'm a firm believer in the "look and play" thing before buying.

The only situation that would make me order, would be if I played the guitar I wanted and it wasn't the right finish or something like that and I couldn't find another one in about a 100 mile radius, then I would try my luck and order.

But I would hate to think that the stock boy or the FedEx man was having a bad day or something and they just started throwing "MY" guitar around everywhere. Cause you know, they sure as hell don't care about you.

I have ordered an American Strat online before and it worked out well. Most retailers allow 30-45 days to try out your purchase, and they even take care of the return shipping if you dont keep it. Overall it is safe to purchase this way, but you dont get the prior hands on experience of sitting in a guitar store for hours getting to know the guitar.

Some online places take this into account & offer easier exchanges than others, but since this is something you're going to probably own for the rest of your life, even this may be too risky. You could try two or three, if necessary, then if one of them didn't suit you, you could just get a refund & go find one yourself.

Back in the late 80's, I went to a huge music store to pick out a PRS. They had a tree with like 25 of them hanging on it, but one played far better than all the rest, & it was significantly less expensive than the most expensive of the 25. It was around 2k, & the priciest was over 3k.

I believe those were all hand made at the time; so see, even then, there can be big differences...

On the other hand, this American Deluxe Ash I bought last week at the store played just fine, & I'm sure it wasn't "a replacement" for a bad one that shipped first: so this would be similar to ordering a great one online, & getting it right the first time.

So it's like this. Do You Feel Lucky, Punk? ;-) (just kidding/quoting Clint)

If you're going to order a guitar, make absolutely sure that whoever you order from will give you a complete refund should you want it.

Well personally, I don't get very good deals around here, and online you can save a LOT of money, I mean you could go into a music shop, give it a play, and then order it online to save money? That make sense? Or like the other guy said. To get a different finish.,

James.
