That's where it all began for me. We discovered that nearly half century ago.You might remember the long past thread we wrote on the subject. I'd been accustomed to referencing the 'sweet spot' between the neck and middle pickup as position two when, in actuality, it's position four based upon current specs across the line.

I've alerted Brad to this thread. We'll see what transpires.

I guess my edit wasn't quick enough. :?

You and I, as well as many others out there have seen players who lay a piece of tape across a 3-way switch slot so they can hit that 'stop' without missing a beat.

I spent years with my "'58" trying to capture Knopfler's tone which is as much in the hands as the guitar because it cuts across the variety of instruments he uses.

I understand that the five way switch was not introduced until 1977. As for the switch positions, it does look like Fender has settled in on 1 as the bridge position.

More likely, mid-sixties. Someone will come in with the facts.

I know some players began notching their 3 ways to make them 5 ways back in the 60s.

To the best of my recollection and I could be wrong, it was somewhere around 76 or 77 that I started seeing them OEM in Strats.

When the five-way pup selector switches first started coming out in factory Strats, I was a little bummed out. I thought that I had discovered a cool way to get another tone by notching it.

It was a PITA when soloing and you hit the switch by accident though. :?

1977 is stuck in my mind as the year of the 5 way switch. I own a '65 Strat that has a 3 way and none of the other mid to late 60s Strats I played had a 5 way.

Oh, and count me as a member of the wrong on the selector switch positions numbering. I always thought the neck pickup was number 1.
