hi
had to fit new strings to my 2007 highway one strat, to replace broken bullet strings that were fitted.
had a set of adagio 10s and put them on, but to get all strings in tune, the trem now sits very high and the tuning does still not sound right and certainly not as good as before and does not seem to stay in tune
any ideas,,,,adjustments ect.
cheers.....

Your guitar probably had 9s on it and when you changed to 10s it puts added tension on the trem. You can go back to 9s or if you want to move up to 10s you will need to adjust trem claw etc. Basically a whole setup is probably needed, including having the nut filed.

When you change to a thicker string gauge the guitar neck is now under more tension and the truss rod needs adjusting. Because each string is thicker there is more tension being placed on the neck, I can't remember the exact number but from 9s to 10s you there is quite a few extra kgs or pounds in total being placed on the neck. If you trem is sitting to high you also need to adjust the screws in the back of the guitar which alter the spring tension to bring it back down to its optimal height. Best to get someone who knows what they are doing if you are unsure

As for the nut you wont need it filed until you change to 12s. I have 11s and the nut is fine using a 52 on the low E, a 56 will need filing though.

My Highway 1 came with 9's on it. I recently changed them to 10's. I did have it professionally set up when I made the change. I do not touch the Truss rods on any of my guitars after the last time I did it and destroyed the neck (I was a lot younger but the memory still haunts me to this day). I will do anything else to a guitar as far as maintanence.

I absolutely love the tone the heavier guage strings have made on my guitar's tone.

It may not be that horrible. I've changed to 10's and I like my action low, my trem sits almost flat. I put all 5 spring on and tighten the two claw screws in, but just a little at a time. I won't mess with truss rod unless you get a lot of string buzz and your action is set low the way you like it. I do all my own, but I like to do my own work. 10's have a great sound, I would recommend going to them instead of back to 9's unless you like to do really hard bends and fingers aren't ready. I would recommend just taking it to a local shop and have them set you up. You'll love the upgrade to 10's, trust me.

hi guys
have eventually changed my strings back to dunlop 9s
trem is now sitting good but i still seem to have the g string in tune with my electrice tuner but still sounds a bit flat, if that makes any sense.
i did notice when changing the strings that the nut holding the tuner was slack, so i tightened that, but still made no difference.
only seems to be the g that is flat though and it was the same when i had the 10s on but was ok when the origional bullets where fitted.
i dont have a local shop to get a setup, so anybody got any ideas?
cheers....david

Your innotation is off. The tremolo may need another spring to hold it down. Some strings have different tensions then others.

Hi David. I've had this happen a few times with one of my guitars. If you back the tuning off on the G quite a bit, and bring it back up, that should do it. Your strings may not be sliding smoothly across all points of contact. Put a little lube or 3-in-1 oil on the trem saddles and in the nut. Wipe it clean so there is no extra residue, and that should do it. If you're still having problems, try different strings, some that are coated. The Elixar's are great, but about $10-12 a set. Suppose to last 4 times longer...blah blah blah. But they feel great, and with the coating slide very well over contact areas

I don't think so. If it was intonation, you could still bring the string up to tune, it would just be out of tune when you're playing up an octave (12th fret). If you put more springs on, it will effect the entire bridge and All strings, not just one. No offense, but see my recommendations I posted. It's just the one string in question. 8)

If the strings were fresh and not streched, they'd go out of tune. If the old strings were broken in, the tension wouldn't be great. New stings are tight, pulling up the tremolo higher then the previous strings. Another idea would be the strings were not wound properly on the posts or just bad set of strings.
