Great guys, thanks much! I like the sounds of my AmStd SSS and HSS Strats, but I am blown over by David Gilmour's playing. If I run across a Lace-equipped guitar I won't be scratching my head now. Another Q: is Fender still using these Lace sensors? If not, what years (about) were they on the Strats? Thanks again!

They were standard equipment on all the Plus Series guitars starting in the late eighties including the Ultra, and the Clapton. The Tele-Plus sported a blue at the neck, and a red dually at the bridge. They are still found on the Buddy Guy MIA Artist Series guitar. Go to www.xhefriguitars.com for a comprehensive collection of Strat Plus Series instruments.

Thanx. Yes my Strat is much like the PRS 513 in that regard. It has more tones than you'll likely ever want to use. Each of the volume & tone pots is a push/pull type. The neck has a full scallop and is a Warmoth Pro Radius neck. I love the Warmoth scalloped necks, I have quite a few of them. And yes, that is my own custom decal that says "Bender Scallopcaster." 8)

That is a great Joe Bonamassa video...

Go into xhefri's website. You'll find that he's done a few like that.

Mark, that's a great sound and playing!

Here is video of Joe Bonamassa playing a Lace sensor'd Strat (I think a Clapton strat, maybe a Plus)- its a big sound, but also he uses the full dynamic range they offer.

That was a first generation Clapton. I managed to get a look at the signature on the headstock. So you may have the midboost figuring into the mix there, as well.

They are my favorite pick ups! I even put a Red Lace in the bridge position of my Jaguar. Those pick ups are one of the reasons my 1989 strat plus dlx is my favorite guitar. I find them to be very versatile and super clean. My strat plus has a gold/silver/blue combo. The blue is a nice blend between humbucker/single coil sound. It can be beefy but still has that signature strat twang. The red is just plain beefy. I'm not a fan of the all gold combo but I play heavier music. I'd love to get a green Clapton strat but I'd have to change out the bridge pup for a blue or red. There is a store on ebay that sells preassembled PG w/ all combos of lace sensor in it. Price are in the low $200 range.

I would like to try the emerald, silver and purple set. I have like 3 sets of gold, and I have 1 red lace in one guitar right now.

All this talk about lace has got me curious. I just picked up an American Std. strat and have been wanting to get a PAF Pro type tone from the bridge pup (I play early, classic metal - think late 70's Priest). Would the Hot Gold suit this or would a Red be better? Thanks.

The Red is a 15k screamer. It is versatile in many ways, but I like it best for hi-gain soloing and riffing. The 13k Hot Gold bridge pickup would be the better choice for you IMO, as it is a bit smoother and has a broader midrange.

Thanks for the quick reply. Having a more controlable mid-range and a smoother top end is definately a bonus, so perhaps the Hot Gold is for me. One concern I have, and I have this concern with all pups, is that I do alot of heavy palm muting and I find that alot of pups suffer in this area. I find alot of them "mush" out under heavy palm muting with overdrive/distortion and I would like to know how the Sensors (especially the Hot Gold) handles this. Thanks for the help.

Hmm. I have a Silver/Blue/Red set in one Strat and don't suffer any such problem. But then I'm a fairly light player with fingers, not a pick, so my experience is likely not the same as yours...

Cheers - C

I never had a high opinion of the blue sensor before I played with one, and when I did- its currently one of my fav pickups. I allways play the neck position when im playing the ultra- it just has a sound on its own. Much like a really fat single like a P90 :D

How well do you think it would sit in the bridge position with some overdrive on it? Maybe like in between a PAF and P90?

Good question. Most people compensate the pick-ups and put the hotter ones like the red at the bridge, and the mellow ones like the silver or gold at the neck. Im thinking it would dirty up quite nicely- that of course depends on what you play. For some reason, the one thing that jumps to mind when thinking about it is a simalarity to the green day sound, with the les paul junior with a P90 at the bridge overdriven.

I can get a fat dirty blues sound from my ultra with the blue with slight distortion, not too much- just enough to break the signal. Another thing is that if you back off the volume a little, laces clean up quite nicely :)

According to the manufacturer, the Blue Lace pickup is voiced for PAF.
