Smark, who mostly posts clips in the pickup area (down this page a bit) has tried them and they sound pretty good.

Thanks. Just listened him doing some Gary Moore, they sounded pretty nice.

I was looking at the Lace Emerald, Silver, Purple set, but the Alumitones are about the same price, but never heard them, so wasn't sure what they were like.
I guess you need to mod the pickguard a little to use them though, or buy a preloaded pickguard.

Hi JasonD: I'm always a little wary of sound clips. What someone else's fingers can do through an unkown rig may not give much of an idea of what a pickup will sound like on our own guitars.

But I must admit I am intrigued by the Alumitone thang and would like to meet some in person soon. At some point I shall have the right project on hand and will give them a try.

I love Sensors, so my mind is open to all things Lace.

Please let us know how you find them if you go with a set. BTW: I think that pickguard mod looks like child's play. No problems there - though it's a one way alteration. If you don't fancy doing it yourself have a word with WDMusic.com - their custom pickguard service is very efficient.

Cheers - C

A guitar shop near me usually has some in stock. And I need to take a neck in there so I might check them out for the guitar I painted.

I got the musiciansfriend catalog in the mail yesterday and they have them for $153, and the Lace Sensors were $168 I think So pretty close in price.

I wonder how they respond to pedals? Someone on this forum must be using them!

The AlumiTones sound great with pedals. And the typical pedal noise is reduced too. Lace says it's because of the low impedance design of the AlumiTone. I also have a set of humbucker sized AlumiTones.

And I also have a set of those Lace Rainbow Sensors, aka the Emerald/Silver/Purple set. Also a very nice calibrated set. The Purple is a really nice bridge pickup if you're looking for some extra body and drive from your bridge pup.

They sound good but what until you see how different they look from a regular wound pickup

That's right, there isn't much to them, They are the lightest weight pickup I've ever used.

And here's a pic of my humbucker sized AlumiTones loaded into one of my Strats...

I have put them in several guitars for people in the past and made two preloads for sale. Humbuckers have a very wide range to them.

Yeah, "wide range" is exactly right. They have a nice broad range bottom end, but I can keep in control just by using the bass control on my amp.

Here's a recording I made with the humbucker sized AlumiTones (Gary Moore again...) and as I recall, I had the bass control between 1 and 2 on the dial...
