If the volume is very different you should turn the pickup screws to adjust them so that they are equal. In positions 1, 3 and 5 the pickups should be equal in volume.Adjust the heights accordingly.

Probably because the Texas Specials are hotter (more output) than the stock single-coil that is in the middle position, the one you didn't replace. I can see a few options:

- compensate by raising the middle pickup/lowering the neck and bridge pickup
- replace the middle pickup with a TS
- enjoy the tonal differences that you'll get between the hotter Texas Specials and the lower-output middle pickup

The utter proof that texas specials aren't the SRV pickup is that they are on the Knopfler signature guitar. You couldnt get two more different players.

Was your guitar a vintage hotrod?

That serial no' starts with VN. If so I suspect the humbucker is wired to coil split in the 2nd possition (bridge and middle pickups). The other pickups will be SCN's which are wound hot anyway. That could be your problem.

Yeah I always considered them a solid country sounding pickup. I didnt know that about them being on the Bonnie Rait. Thats 3 guitars for (or based on) very different players.

Wow, I wasn't aware that the Knopfler Signature used Texas Specials.

I sure wouldn't have guessed that.

I have 2 guitars with them on .A SRV and a Texas Special strat from 2003.Both guitars sound very different. The Texas Special strat has the custom staggered pickups with a 2 point trem and a 9.5 radius and the SRV has the 12" radius with a 6 point trem with vintage staggered pickups. There is better balance with the Texas Special strat, but the SRV has a more raw sound with more bite.Part of it is the height of the pickups , but alot of other things coming in to play.I see what Niki means about the country sound in the bridge /middle, but the neck us great for blues or the neck/middle. IMHO.
