firstly, my name is jeff, but everyone calls me 'Happy'. its a misnomer, as tall guys are called 'shorty' and fat guys are called 'skinny'.
ANYWAY...i MUST know what makes this guy's strat sound as it does.
even as a novice player, i understand this is more about effects than actual guitar. BUT after all, it is a strat and its been really buggin me that i dont know.
it sounds like "a buzzsaw cutting thru sheetmetal".
it may not be your choice of music, but bear with it.
thanks

EDIT: upon closer inspection, it may not be a strat. but i'd still appreciate any input re: tone

Big black eh??? Well they've a new fan. Kind of like minor threat with a touch of dri.

Anyhow onto the sound. Its pretty much a cheap singlecoil into a lot of squarewave distortion. a proco rat pedal/original fulltone distortion or a grey fuzzface (silicon based) will get you halfway there. The rest is a solidstate amp with its gain and volume right up. Notice halway through he lowers the amps volume (probably a request from the mixing desk). You could get it on a strat, I think you'd do better with a 3 saddle bridge tele. They have a good deal of metallic clang about em anyway.

Free beer for the punks.

I think Nik is right, but I would also add a flanger or a phaser set at a low level, just for the mettalic sound...

I thought that at first too, but then decided it was just a out of tune guitar and feedback . Still a flanger never hurts. Electro harmonix's big muff will get you around that sound too.

Umm, what you need to do is make sure your guitar is horribly out of tune, and hit the strings as hard as possible almost with intention to break them. Rub your pick up and down the thickest strings and shout cables.

If I had that guitar tone, I would just quit playing.

*sigh*
ok...did i ask for anyone's opinion on what they thought of the music, itself? no. just interested in the tone. in fact, did you read the part where i said, "it sounds like "a buzzsaw cutting thru sheetmetal".
it may not be your choice of music, but bear with it." ? you missed your exit off that highway.

to everyone else, thanks

nikininja...good comparison.

meh. i'm over it. :)

theres a lot of good info from 'ninja and 'tube, that was very helpful in my quest of this particular sound

EDIT: i'm almost surprised someone didn't reply with "amphetamines" as the answer, as another forum poster did haha

Is it just me or does that first part have a similiar tone to Iron Man by Ozzy? Just alot thinner with absolutely no bass at all.
Good thing you got some informative responses cause I wouldn't have a clue as to where to start to try to match that tone..... maybe it's in the "cables".

Good luck in your quest.
