Hi folks,

Do you guys find any noticable difference in the neck profiles between the v necks on the American std. deluxe, the Clapton and the J. Vaughan ?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Peter

With the ones I've owned, I'd have to say, no.

Despite never owning a clapton I tried one last week. I'm assured by people in the know that it is similar to my 57hotrod, I see what their saying. However the 96 clapton I tried was far more akin to my 50th anni deluxe to my mind.

That said I didnt spend a lot of time on the clapton.

Most definitely yes. The necks on the Deluxe and Vaughan appear to be what I call generic V-neck, which is referred to in specs as a 'soft V'. According to my readings on the subject, the Clapton neck was based on the '57 Blackie's in the condition it was in 1985. Niki and I have previously, in personal correspondence , shared info comparing wrap around measurements in mm. between his Hotrod, my '89, my Gilmour. I also own a VG Deluxe V-neck, and once owned a '97 Clapton and a Buddy Guy Polka Dot. The Hotrod and the Clapton are close, but the Clapton is a tad sleeker.

Alainlafrance, our collector colleague extraordinaire, owns one of three Claptons build by Todd Krause in 2003 to the specs of the artist, which are referred to as 'The Triplets.'' He tells me that the neck on that guitar is slimmer still, and he has two others to compare with.

You take a mm tape measure and do a wrap around at the first and twelfth frets on the necks of interest. You'll find the results interesting. It's a bit empirical, I agree, but for the purpose, aufficient.

I have not done this yet with the Dave Murray, because I can't seem to find one on the wall of any store I've been in so far. I take the specs of both my Deluxe, and my Clapton with me when I shop, as well as my tape measure.

Following this I will see if I still have on file my emails with Niki on this. If so, I will update my remarks.

Doc

Well since i took on the neck build venture, ive had to invest in a digital vernier. Next time I get the strings off that guitar I'll get accurate to the thou" front to back measurements. Seeing as though I only restrung it yesterday dont expect a quick answer.

Good to see you back Doc, I trust the southeast was relaxing.

I'm back a fortnight now. The wife, just this afternoon. Everything is in place for the onslaught. Neither of us had much of a respite this trip.

I will have the pleasure of NOT being around for the annual Disneyworld grandkiddies haj first week in December. I am told that an iguana has taken fancy to our property, so there's a tale to yet unfold. Hopefully there'll be more R'nR end of the year. I'm looking forward to a pint with Statmansteve and a few others in the blast zone down there. They know who they are.

Waiting on the data at your leisure.

Doc.

Search the Forums for the thread...Todd Krause Blackie. Scroll down the thread to the June 4th postings between Niki and myself. You'll find the data there. Hope that will be of some help.

When I have a moment I'll remeasure my VG and my Clapton and post them.
