To get the best tone and quality of sound from the guitar, does it make a difference in how you us the volume controls? By this I mean should one turn the guitar's volume control high and use the amp to control the sound level or keep the guitar control low to mid and use the amp volume control to raise or lower sound level. Is there any difference to reaching the volume you want? Thaks for any replies.

The Strat's volume knob is located where it is for a reason. I know from research that Hendrix, Santana, Gilmour and SRV used their volume knob to control dynamics and feedback. Keeping the gain up on your amp and keeping the volume low on your guitar you get your clean sound. Then roll up the volume with your pinkie and cry out your solo. A compression box helps a lot when using this technique.

Agree with Manbu; tone is subjective and that is a way to get the best range. Capacitor values can help to tune the treble roll off that comes with decreasing the volume, or eliminate it altogether. This give true control over to the tone controls. A lot of us prefer to alter the mood of the tone with the volume at the same time; rolling back can darken a bright neck pickup for a certain lead tone, diming the knob makes her cut through. Explore and enjoy!
