A strange thing happen to me over the weekend when I changed the strings on my one month old Fender American Strat. This was my first time replacing strings on a Fender (I've been a Gibson owner all of my guitar playing years). Well, to make a long story short, when I was done replacing the strings and adjusting the tremolo assembly (bridge), I noticed a little black spring on the floor. Not knowing where it came from, but knowing it came off the guitar, I put the spring in a little plastic bag. The guitar seems to work and play fine.

I thought the spring might belong in the bridge hole where the string goes though (behind the guitar). Is that correct?

Does anyone know about Fender's little black springs?

It fell out of the hole where the trem arm goes, and helps keep the arm in whatever position you set it in without screwing it all the way down to the bottom.

If you don't use the trem arm, just keep it in the plastic bag. If you DO, put the spring in the hole before your crew the arm in.

Yes, dont put it back in. those springs are known to break trem arms. Happened to me. And now I cant find a right trem arm that fits my John Mayer strat. You dont need the spring. if you want one to keep the arm still then just get a spring from a pen.

You're going to have to explain how anybody could possibly attribute a broken trem arm to one of those springs, or why you can't find a replacement for your JM Strat.

http://www.callahamguitars.com/ go to this website and then look on the left side and click on block details and theres your answer.

This spring causes the threads to gall and suddenly the arm is locked in the block and the only way to remove it is to break it off. Most people lose this spring without even knowing it, which is good. But trying to replace it is a mistake.

And I seriously cant find a trem arm that fits my strat, I've tried standard american arms, mexican arms. Is there any other arm? I'm totally stumped.
