Man I couldnt give a flying one if EC played a mosrite or a bigsby. The fact is he deserves respect as a songwriter and guitarist. Not some guy on a strat forum who has to creep that statement in. Who thinks he gets better 'snap' out of the way his trem's set. I'm sure Eric doesnt worry over such trivialities.

That said please just dont make snipes like that. No one appreciates it, it does nothing but inflame peoples emotions (no I'm not a clapton fan). But please participate, theres plenty of fun to be had If we can keep such things under control.

Sorry for coming off a little hard nosed. I genuinely mean that. Lets just leave them comments out, eh mate?

Feel free to read the post where I DO say he deserves respect...just perspective.

Well, whether or not Eric is overrated is all rather subjective, isn't it?
As an aside, a friend once came over to my house and told me "Guess what? The greatest guitar player in the world is dead!" and I said "CLAPTON'S DEAD!!!!???" and he said "No, HENDRIX is dead."
All a matter of opinion.

If he deserves respect, why make the snipe in the first place?

What is overrated anyway, what exactly does that mean? Does it mean he doesnt sell as many records as he would have us believe? That his concert tickets dont sell for £200 a time and are constantly sold out?

If thats overrated, I wish I was overrated. I suggest you re-evaluate the definition of the word respect, then see if the point is worth arguing.

At the risk of repeating myself - To me the term "overrated" at the heart of it means you disagree with a majority position on how good something is as a matter of degree ,i.e. one thinks Clapton is not as good as a majority of his fans do. Again a subjective matter that boils down to one's opinion. And of course, people are entitled to their opinion. The problem lies when someone states this "overrating" as a matter of fact and not opinion.
IMO. (heh)

Bathead.
I'm really not disputing the right for everyone to have their own tastes. I for one dont like clapton, I never listen to him. If something comes on the radio, I enjoy it. But its ultimately not to my taste. Like you say, its all perspective and highly personal.
What I am disputing is the use of the term 'respect'. It seems to be a throwaway word a lot of the time these days and used as nothing more than a cop-out.

Anyhow time for me to go and work on becoming overrated.

Mine is set flush, but I may go back to floating someday.

As far as EC goes, he IS the most decorated rock guitarist of ALL time. Was it 3 or 4 groups he put into the rock and roll hall of fame?
Yardbirds
Derek and the Dominos
Cream...

Its definately ok to have preferences, but some you may have to defend a bit. What would George Harrison have done without Claptons influence? Besides possibly keeping his marriage alive?

Agreed except for the high part.

I need to realize that these are just my preferences.

BTW, I consider Eric Clapton somewhat overrated. Seriously. His Strat is also midboosted modded.

Even Derek and the Domino's Layla would be nothing without Duane Allman...the entire album. Early Clapton? Cream? Fine. Was he playing a Strat then? But much of the rest is quite conservative "competent" stuff.

now i really believe your high. but you know what, everyone is entitled to there own opinion. ill respect that.
that is why he was the lead guitarist with john lennon, keith richards playing bass and mitch mitchel (i think that is his name drummer for jimmy hendrix experience) back in the 60s, AND MULTIPLE albums and hit songs.

played "yer blues"
