:?: you're having someone else remove the trem arm? like as in having someone else turn it counter clockwise for you? im confused

newbie here, so i really have no idea what im doing when it comes to mods or repairs. Is it really as simple as turning it counter clockwise? dont you have to put that block in the back too? Im just not trying to mess anything up.

Fender builds two kinds of trem arm assemblies. One screws in, and there's a small spring in the tap hole which stabilizes the arm as it is tightened. Theres' another, which snaps in. To 'stop' the mass block as Clapton desired it, Fender simply inserted a block of wood of the size you see in the photo after tightening the screws on the trem claw to bring the bridge flat to the top of the guitar. Any competent technician can do this for you. Now the thickness of the wood block will vary depending on the size of the mass block of the guitar you own. For example, MIM's have a much thinner trem block than the vintage one in the pic. This is one of Alain's 'Clapton's, the gold leaf model. Afterwards, remove the trem arm in the usual fashion by either turning it counterclock-wise, or pulling it out, depending upon which guitar you own, and stow it away in your case or gig bag. If applicable, see if you can shake that small spring out as well and put that aside for safe keeping, or put a small spot of tape over the hole. Notice that new Fender guitars have an orange disc over that tap hole? There's a reason for it.

[i][quote="Ceri"]Given how many Strat players don't use their wammy that is a bit surprising in itself.[/i

As an aside mate, you see the way that rout is done to accommodate the battery? If you did that on a guitar with the old swimming pool rout you'd open the wall into the control cavity. That's why I had to pull the middle springs and put the battery in there when I installed the EMG DG-20 in my 97 Strat and blocked the trem.

Hardtails sound different because of the missing energy gathered by the steel tremolo block but you gain in smoothness on delicate harmonics.

That's just voodoo physics.

Hi Orville! Unlax a bit. I think we've got it all figured out and under control. The OP could benefit from a course in Strats 101 at Fender U.

woahhh, yeah i better have someone else do it for me. The strat is a MIJ 1990 model. I'd imagine i can just spin it counter clockwise and itll come off but without being 100% sure im hesitant to do so. My understanding is, i can spin it off then the springs will stay in until i take the strings off and at that point withouth the block ill have to take them off and change them one at a time. Again sorry for the newbie question since i have only been playing for about 8 months, but i HATE the trem bar and it only gets in the way

We'll just have to wait until he plucks his magic twanger and the spring falls out.

^^^ Per setup specifications, the proper technique is to hold the tremolo stationary while the guitar is rotated about 873 degrees!
