OK, for good or ill, here's the way I've figured the tone controls as best I can.

positon 1 (bridge): both controls OFF
position 2 (bridge+mid): bottom control ON, top control OFF
position 3 (mid): bottom control ON, top control OFF
position 4 (mid + neck): both controls ON
position 5 (neck): bottom control OFF, top control ON

I'm assuming from that, that the bottom control is wired to the mid pup, and the top control is wired to the neck pup.

Howzat? Sound right?

By George, I think he's got it!!

With respect I think you need to change your mind-set... tone is fundamental to 'not sucking'... you seem to insist on separating the two, but they are not mutually exclusive.

A good example is voice 16 on the SCXD – that'll make your chords and arpeggios sound great no matter how bad you think you are.

Anyway... only trying to offer some practical advice. :?

Well, I disagree. it seems to me you're placing TOO Much importance on the tone controls and effects. Good technique is more important to me right now. Exactly how the tone controls and effects are set is secondary.
I never said I wouldn't use the tone controls ever. As I go along, I will be messing around with the tones and effects available to me. It's more important to me now that I maintain a consistent tone when practicing, so that I get a better idea of how I'm progressing, being able to hear each and every note cleanly and consistenly from practice session to practice session. Channel one on the SCXD with the tone controls on my guitar on full treble works just fine for this purpose.
At some point when I feel more sure of my playing and start playing for and with others, then, I will start worrying more about the tone.

Sorry I bothered. Beats me why you asked a question about the tone controls in the first place!!! :?

Just a thought: Years (and years) ago when I was first learining to play, a guy on the next block from me who had already been playing for several years told me that the mark of a good guitarist is anyone who can turn his amp up to 10 and sound like a million bucks and then shut the amp off and sound just as good. His point was that amplification tends to enhance one's playing and at the same time, hide one's mistakes. From then on and right up through today, I NEVER practice with an amp. Rehearsal situations with a band, yes, but that's it.

The point: Unless one wants to be a slave to the amp and other playing enhancing gadgets of today, development of personal technique does not come from electronics.

Sigh... If you would read my posts, I've already said a couple of times I WILL be messing around with the tone now and then (at some point), one reason why I wanted to figure out the tone controls of my guitar, I just don't place as much importance on it as you seem to do. I simply disagree with your assertion that tone is as important a part in "not sucking" as good technique. I don't need to change my mind-set, as you say. I need to practice more and then I can play with the tone (if I'm in the mood).

?? How is you telling me "I need to change my mind-set" Helping? All that's telling me is that you think your way is the only way and everyone should do or think like you do. That's not helping, that's pontificating.

It was a suggestion, not pontification. You're taking offence where none was meant. I apologise if I've upset you.
