I PREFER none over the other. Both have their merits.

i think it really depends on the colour of the guitar; but like the natural look of maple :)

I'm a new player. What I'm hearing here is that the choice of maple or rosewood is pretty much up to personal preference (rosewood seems to be winning by a slim margin in the poll), but one thing everyone seems to agree on is that each has its merits.

What are the comparative differences between the two? I would think that the choice of one over the other affects playability more than sound, but I don't know.

How do they differ?

Thanks, all.

Rosewood gives you a thicker sound. Maple is brighter and faster.

I've been in "maple mode" since the late 80's. Grew up on rosewood & ebony fretboards, & they were my favorite then, but my tastes have changed, & nothing compares to maple necks & fretboards (to me), now.

The darker woods seem to be thicker sounding (heh heh, imagine a maple fretboard on a Les Paul), & the maple fretboards seem to possess more of what I call "candy apple" brilliance & it also has a faster feel.

The faster feel may come more from the finish (which also might really be the same reason for the brilliance) but I really believe it's caused by both the wood & the finish. No doubt though, the old Tele's & Strats with the thicker neck & fretboard finishes sound far more brilliant than these newer, thinner finishes.

Try them all & decide which catches your ear better, & also feels better to YOU.
