I've been using Ernie Ball 10's for the past couple of years. I get a lot of people telling me the D'addarios are better. To me if you have a great guitar and a great amp set-up, i never knew how much the strings would REALLY effect the sound, ya know...

I'm pretty sure there's only a few makers of guitar strings. Many different brands are really the same strings. They all get them from the same place.

There's only so much you can do in the making of them.

I have tried most of the big name brands and have to say that there is a big difference in sound. Not so much on the unwound strings, but definitely the bottom three. Do yourself a $10 experiment and try buying 6 singles of your bottom E string (all the same size and metal type) and put them all on your guitar and test them out. Of the nickelplated steel, I found D'addario and Ernie Ball sounded the best (very similar) but the D'addario's sustained a little longer.

String size also makes a huge difference, play clean through any tube amp and you can hear the difference a mile away. Another $10 experiment is to try stringing your guitar the usual way with the top three strings from a .008 or .009 pack and use the top three (unwound) strings from a .011 or .012 pack for the bottom three strings and then do a similar experiment with the wound strings, its a world of difference.

I much prefer the D'addario EXL145 Heavy (12/16/20/32/42/54) over the Ernie Ball Not Even Slinky (12/16/24/32/44/56) because it doesn't feel like the third string (G) is in proportion.

I had been using D'addario XL's for years. A few weeks ago I tried a set of Power Slinkys. I'm never looking back...

My favorite strings are whatever I can get the cheapest.

In the right gauge, though.

I'm working through a box of GHS Fatties that were about $2 a set.

On my Fender Strats I use either 3250Ls or 3250Rs depending on the individual guitar. There is , for me, just no beating Fender Super Bullets for properly feeding a Strat whammy bar. For a more vintage tone, I will sometimes use Fender pure-nickel wrap strings.

I've always found that Dean Markleys "Signature" strings size 9/10 work well for me  .
