First off, I'd get a 2nd opinion. Most refret jobs can be sorted with a good stone and polish. I charge £90 ($150) for that. If the guitar is relatively new but has some dents on the frets, a new fret or two may be required.
$250/£170?? isnt too bad for a refret. Just make sure that you do get the guitar refretted if it needs it and that the tech doesnt just level and polish.

Your neck will only take 5 or 6 refrets before it needs scrapping.

Please post some pictures of your fingerboard for us to better advise you.

Yes please!

And just to add another thought: it is often only some (probably lower) frets that really need replacing, even on a heavily worn neck.

These days it is easy for a luthier to source fret wire in numerous different gauges and so find exactly the one that matches what's on the guitar. This makes partial refrets a reasonable option. So you can have a few of the frets replaced and then all of them levelled and recrowned. Which should be a meaningful saving on a full refret.

(All assuming the fingerboard doesn't need major attention - for which all of the frets may indeed need to come off.)

Something to discuss with a luthier...

Cheers - C

I absolutely agree with Ninja here...get a second opinion and even a third. Without seeing the guitar it's hard to call but it may only need a leveling and not a complete fret replacement. Also, there -are- other things that can cause buzzing as well...such as a poor setup.

I would also add that if you do get multiple concurring opinions that it does indeed need new frets, make SURE you take it to someone qualified to do this kind of work (and ask for references!). Not every yo-yo who owns a screw driver and works at a guitar shop actually knows what they are doing with this type of job.

Just my $.02,
Jim
