Not being funny, but if you're thinking of an Am Deluxe and you already have an Am Std... and you're after Eric Clapton tone... why didn't you just buy an Eric Clapton Strat?

lace sensor hot gold are great pickups, however I took off the 250k pot and put a 500K so that the bridge pickup would back off some...it was way too "quacky" at first with the 250 pot. i really love these pickups though, very good tones and very wide range of tones you can get out of them. just my 2 cents.

I got a spotless 2008 Am Deluxe on eBay for £600.00... that's the going rate for an immaculate used one here (UK), why don't you import one? I've also seen used EC's for £800.00. WAAAAY less than $2100.

Played a very nice 92 clapstrat the weekend, going for £700.

You just cant get authentic strat tones out of that guitar, close but never near enough to my ear. The bridge pickup on that guitar never has enough output in comparison to the neck pickup. I changed mine to a dimarzio fs2, its a nail driver now.

Blues

At the risk of everyone flipping out here, overreacting, giving me science lessons, telling me about pickup configurations, mid boosts, db ratings, condemnation, and generally being banished to hell for saying anything even slightly controversial. Against my better judgement...Here is my educated opinion.

First...and for no good reason...I have been playing for over 30 years, I also play the bass, the piano, and play the drums for a classic rock house band for the last 5 years. My son plays professionally with 2 bands, does studio work, teaches, and was trained at Berklee College of Music in Boston...Although this means nothing here...I would still like to share something with you.

I read these posts all the time with great people like you looking for someones "tone". Your quest is for Eric Clapton's....Often the quest is for Eric Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray and so on. These are IMO and in the opinion of most music scholars, unrealistic desires.

To get Eric Clapton's "tone"...you would have to buy Eric Clapton's Hands. His "tone" is achieved by the way he plays the guitar, not by the guitar that he plays. His touch, his bends, his vibrato, his picking technique and so on. Eric's tone was unique when he played an SG, when he played a 335, and many years of different Strats.

Lots of people are freaking out right now, but there's no debate here, just guitar playing fact. IMO you should buy whatever guitar you love and play it with passion in "Bluesstrattone" Tone. As good a player as you might be, if Eric Clapton gave you his rig after a concert, you would probably still be searching for his "Tone" ...because its HIS TONE not yours.

I could give you Tiger Wood's golf clubs and I'm sure that you wont become #1 in the world, I could give you Dr Cristian Bernard's knives, but you probably would struggle with heart transplantation.

Get a guitar that you will love and cherish, and play the hell out of it as often as you can. Play Eric's stuff and have a great time. EC is my personal favorite by the way, and I play his stuff all the time, on an amazing Am Deluxe that I love, in "Noodles Tone"

Play often
Noodles

Jrom is right.

But you can move your equipments inherent tone towards Eric's by using what he uses. next you have to emulate his technique. Also it's hard to really pin down an artist's tone. EC for example has literally hundreds, or more, different guitar tones on tape. Yet he retains his own sound, there is some quality he imparts that no matter the equipment or the setting carries his own distinct character through.

The guitar tones, and amp tones are very different, yet it is discernibly him, you can tell in a handful of notes or chords, even if you haven't heard the tune before.

Funny thing is, by the time you get good enough to approximate his sound, you'll probably have developed your own voice instead.

i see what your saying.
1. no two guitars have the same tone, correct.
2. eric claptons tone is all in he hands, yeah ill give you that, limted.
im not trying to play or sound like him.
3. have you ever heard groaning the blues, from, from the cradle.
his guitar is set up withh texas specials. yeah his style is there, his tone somewhat, alittle more trebly compared than the vintage noiseless.
which proves my point on different pickups.
4. i have a hwy 1 am strat and cp 60s, those three guitars sound differently "tone" is different.
they dont handle gain the same.

that is what im looking for.

ive played the eric clapton strat at a guitar shop, compared "tone"
with a am deluxe, and an am std. way different "tone"
jrom, i understand where your getting at, but no,
your way off of what my original posts purpose was.
