Should a mexican strat be on the heavy side. I had a 2005 cream colored strat that I upgraded to a 2008 lake placid blue one. The cream colored one was a bit heavier then the blue one. Is that a good or bad sign that one is heavier than the other :?: :?: :?: :?:

I've got a 62 Hot Rod that is the heaviest Strat I have ever owned. It is also the best Strat I have ever owned. It also resonates more than any other Strat I've ever owned.

It's just a little difference in the density of the body wood most likely. Have you put them on a scale to see what they really weigh?

It's because cream is a lighter colour than blue... sorry, couldn't resist. :D

My 2004 MIM Standard is fairly heavy. Nothing close to a Les Paul, and not uncomfortably heavy, but a little heavier than some other Strats.

As has been said, weight has to do with the density of the wood. Denser wood should make a guitar brighter and have more sustain. It may also be slightly louder (acoustically and theoretically electrified as well) and also possibly grittier as a result. In reality the differences between woods are not the highest priority on the list of parameters affecting tone. Pickups/pots, amps and your hands (the way you touch the strings) all play significantly more prominent roles in your overall tone. IMO I would ONLY select or reject a guitar based on wood AFTER I had the entire rest of the rig sorted out and nailed down. Wood selection makes a difference but it's a little one.

Of course, there are also other tone variables like set neck vs. bolt neck, headstock angle, bridge design and such things but then you'd be comparing Fenders with non Fenders and those issues have nothing to do with the differences created by wood selection on a particular guitar like a Strat.

Non-fat cream is lighter... All kidding aside, I haven't weighed my Am Deluxe but is is definitely heavier (and more resonant unplugged, but not noticably more resonant plugged in) than my MIM CP 50's...

Some are laminated but not all.

My '04 MIM Stdd is 8 lbs 9 oz. Some here have referred it to "an anchor", but it seems that weight is actually quite average compared to other MIMs. It is definitely way lighter than a Les Paul ...
