If you don't want to spend too much and want him to get a good guitar maybe a fender mim strat or maybe an american one.

I would say that if he doesn't know how to play then the Strat Standard, by squire is a pretty good choice. Also the MIM are nice too.

If he has been playing for a bit: The Jimmie Vaughn Strat is not too expensive and sounds good. Also I love the Highway 1 Strat. If he likes metal than the HWY1 with a hum bucker in the bridge will do him some good. I picked up a highway 1 for $580 and I love it.

You could do what I did. When my son said, "Dad I want to play the guitar." I got him a $300 guitar that I thought that he would like (And he did) and when he was playing for a bit and I knew he was serious I took him to a music store and said, "pick whatever you like within $600."

In the end I saved some money and he got a guitar that he loves to play.
I hope this helps. Let me know what you deside to do.

Paris

Mostly depends on what style he likes to play. Getting a guitar with a sound that doesn't match your style can be really bothering. Figure out the sound he wants to achieve and post it, so we'll be more able to help you out.

A highway one, MIM, or non-american strat would probably be good for your price range

Mim deluxe would actually be a very nice guitar for him.

Is it for Christmas? If it is I can't think of anything more beautiful than a chrome american strat in chrome red with a rosewood fingerboardon a stand right in front of the tree with a nice red bow around the neck, hooked up to a shiny new Fender amp. :)
