I don't think it will go cheap but the refinish means very little to me as i am a player and not a collector ..And if the guitar has been refinished and isn't 100% original it may lower the price enough to affordable..Im just not knowledgeable enough to know if it is the real deal..And would like others that know more about vintage guitars to give there opinions..

Yep, that's exactly how a 1950 Broadcaster gets sold...

Through a Craigslist ad, with one bad photo, and a demand from the seller that you tell him how much you'll pay for it.

Would'nt touch it with a 10 foot pole, even if I had the $$. How do you put an ad on craigslist with one poor quality pic for a 50 Broadcaster? You do it if your unloading a fake!

If its real it will have Fender Broadcaster on the headstock decal. If I wanted to prove it was genuine I would at least post a pic of the headstock that was legible. As far as I know they only came in Blonde with a black pickguard. If it was genuine the refinish would knock its value down at least 20 to 30%. Original and in good shape it 's worth $90,000 to $115,000. If the owner has provenance (receipts, documented history, pictures etc..) that would help its value but still $60,000 would be a good price. I can see why he turned down $12,000.

The legit way to sell something like that is to do it on consignment through somebody like Gruhn's.

I have to agree with the general consensus here...not that I have anything against selling such a guitar on Craigslist or anything. As far as I'm concerned, Craigslist is like Ebay and anything goes. That said, I would also want considerably more than some yabba's word that it's authentic. I would want to see -SEVERAL- high quality images detailing every last aspect of the instrument as well as a certificate of authenticity before I would even CONSIDER placing a bid.

If the seller can provide a certificate and enough images that the instrument appears authentic, then I would DEMAND to inspect the instrument in person...again before considering a bid. I would want that neck off and the pickguard removed so I could personally inspect -everything-. I wouldn't spend $5000 on an instrument without inspecting it FIRST, let alone any approximate value this of this instrument if it is indeed genuine. "I'm sorry...you want me to drop $60,000 - $80,000 grand on an instrument without having looked at it in person first? Ain't gonna happen...".

Personally the finish/refinish issue doesn't really bother me that much as long as the instrument could still be verified but that would indeed be the question...verification of authenticity. In this day and age, just because someone says "yea, it's real"...sorry but that don't mean a d@mned thing. I would also say that the way this listing is worded...well....does seem rather shady. Almost as though the seller is trying to press the issue of selling it ("it's worth elevates every day" and so on). People often tend to have knee-jerk reactions with Craigslist..."oh...if I don't buy it now, someone else will" and that's how people get screwed.

Regardless, remember this; the burden of proof lies with the seller. If he wants people to believe this is a genuine Broadcaster, then -he- needs to prove it...and that starts with a certificate of authenticity and allowing a perspective buyer to properly inspect the item. If he can't provide that, I wouldn't offer more than $150 tops.

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim
