Hey guys,

Well my birthday is coming up soon and I want a guitar to play around with. I know a bit so far (tableture, strings etc..).

I am set on the Fender Stratocaster Standard but I noticed there's two models. One is HSS and the other isn't. So I simply want to know what the difference is exactly. I've done some reading and it seems to have to do with the amount of coils or something, didn't really get it.

Regardless, I'm a beginner so what would you guys suggest?

Welcome to the forum.A HSS means there is a humbucker in the bridge position rather than the traditional single coil.As far as what to recommend, unless we know what kind of music you play, I have no idea.BTW, search tool is your friend.

Thank you for clearing that up for me.

I did a search on google for humbucker vs single-oil and got the answers I needed. Humbucker's seem to be for a meatier beefy sound while single coils sound a tad more "clean".

I know what I want now. Thanks again budglo.

If you are into Rock, Metal, Grunge, or Hard Alternative music you will most likely want that HSS pickup configuration. If you are into Blues, Country, Classic Rock, or Jazz you will most likely want the SSS configuration.

Either way you can play any type of music with any pickup configuration, you just have to know what you are playing and have the equipment to bring out the tones you want.

I personally prefer the H.S.S or what most call a Fat Strat..Even though the majority of my guitar influence use the standard three single coils..I also have some of my guitars set up to shut off one of the coils of a humbucker to give me the versatility of both type of pickups,,The Humbucker will give you a thicker heavier tone while the singles will give you a more bell like clear note clarity..Most consider a traditional Stratocaster to be a three single coil guitar..
