CE stands for Conformité Européenne, which is French for "European Conformity." A product in one of the controlled product categories cannot legally be sold in the EU unless it has passed the tests to receive the CE marking.

For a company trying to sell a product, getting a CE marking makes things much easier because it means you can sell the product anywhere in the EU. In the United States, electronic device manufacturers need to meet the same sort of requirements to get FCC approval.

You'd be surprised at how many people over here have absolutely no idea what the European Union is.

I remember in a survey in the US, asking where Iraq was, 45% of people pinpointed France (honestly)... but I guess if you asked where, for instance, Idaho is, the average European wouldn't get close.

Now now let's play nice kids. Were all on the same team here! ...O.k. so I think the EU thing came to exist out of neccessity. So many countries wanting a common currency and faster trade. I think it makes sense because you can travel 2000 miles across the USA and use the same currency. :D Why not over there too? It's a good idea.

I think it's inevitable to use a strong US dollar everywhere so why not a Euro in Europe? Eventually we'll probably have a common currency that's worldwide?
Maybe we already do- it's called Paypal; Mastercard/Visa.

A guitar made by Fender is worldwide now too. I long for 1990 prices again.

With respect, you have to understand what the EU is about and how it works. If it was simply a matter of a common currency I wouldn't have a problem with it, but when it comes to having most of your laws made in Brussels (Belgium) by unelected EU officials, that's when you wave goodbye to democracy and freedom. Also, such is the level of corruption and incompetence, the auditors have refused to sign off the EU accounts for something like a decade.

But never mind eh... it's all too much for a guitar forum.

A government with control over its currency is kinda fascist to say the least. Everyone seems to be alright with it though. I think it is because modern education has really failed us. At least here in CA. I would say its probably true for the rest of the U.S's education system.

The EU was the vision of Jean Monnet, an appointed official of the French government immediately after WWII. It was seen as a means to rehabilitate Europe, and especially Germany, so as to avoid a repeat of the collapse after WWI that had led to the second world war. It was originally called the European Coal and Steel Community, a sort of free trade zone. It wasn't about a common currency. That came much later.

It would be ignorant to assume that the currency change was not planned. Soon we may all share the same currency, which I am not opposed to, but if you allow the unification of all resources, economies, and power to one group, (UN), you are asking for trouble. 90% of us run around thinking we know what we are talking about, while the truth is, a sickly, communist education system has polluted our thoughts so thoroughly that our ignorance is now our worst enemy.

I hate ruining the mellow atmosphere here with political jargon, but sometimes I just can't help myself.

357, do a little bit of research next time! Although mediocrity is praised in today's society, try to break out of the mold!

Perhaps you should do a little research yourself so that you can see where the EU came from. I recommend Desmond Dinan's "Ever Closer Union," the definitive English language history of the EU. Professor Dinan is a Jean Monnet Professor of European History at George Mason University in Fairfax Virginia. He's the man.

Well in an attempt to lighten the mood my 2008 USA Standard also has a sticker on the back of it with a refuse bin with a cross through it to helpfully remind me not to put it in the bin.....

Cos, ya know, Im likely to accidently do that

Damn. Mine didn't have the sticker, so.... thinking it was a directive from the EU... I put it out with the recycling last Thursday.
