Hey guys, this is my first post ever as i recently purchase my first fender guitar. A sunburst rosewood neck VG Strat (bought it like 3 months ago on clearance price  ).

I've been playing guitar for almost 8 years and i've had several guitars and i've been doing all the setup on them since like 3 years ago...

I didn't knew about the bi-flex system till' now, so i want all your advice possible regarding on how to deal with it, what are the advices and tips the experienced user can give me, etc,etc...

Bye, and thanks for reading.

Hi jj_villafane, welcome to the Forum.

As you (probably) know, the Bi-Flex trussrod can force the neck to bend in either direction, unlike a traditional single rod trussrod, which can only bend it backwards to counteract the force the strings are placing on the neck.

Bi-Flex is just Fender's name for what everyone else calls a double action trussrod. Here's a photo of a couple of double action trussrods I happen to have lying around, so's people can see what we're talking about. The red one is Stew-Mac's version, the blue one comes from WD Music. They both do exactly the same thing as Fender's Bi-Flex rod:

To answer your question - sort of - in real life I have never, ever needed to call upon the reverse capability of a two-way rod. I'd be mighty curious to hear if anyone here has.

In theory I guess you might have a neck that was warping into such a strong back bow the strings might not exert enough tension to pull it straight or into front bow. That's the situation a double action rod is there to deal with.

In reality, the only neck I ever had that pulled backwards that way had to be fixed with more serious treatment. I happen to have a photo of that, too:

In practice, use your Bi-Flex rod just the same way you would any other. To control front bow and set the relief exactly where you want it. I'd be amazed if you ever find yourself needing to turn that screw the other way.

Any help?

Cheers - C

I hope that one turned out okay. Did it?

The strings were still on it?!?

That was the kinda cavalier fella I was, back in those days. In fact, you can't see but the whole of the unscrewed bridge was still on the other end of those strings too - truly!

Pointless, because I found it took several months for the neck to come straight, by which time the strings had got knocked around and picked up a couple of kinks and had to be changed before reassembling. That's called learning as you go...

But in fact, yes, the neck came straight and stayed that way. Time did the work...

Cheers - C
