I never really understood why Fender doesn't offer the Strat with a choice of hardtail or trem bridge. They also don't offer rosewood or maple on all models. I'm not an artist series fan, although I do like the set up on the Robert Cray model...but it's not offered in Maple.

They used to in the American Standard line, but stopped a couple of years ago b/c of low sales. I had one, but I didn't like it at all

I think the term bridge is completely fine, even though I don't use it. I really never even install the bar. The only real drawback is if you break a string and everything goes out of tune. Otherwise I don't even know that it's there.

For a company that offers the Strat in so many different configurations, you would think that hard tail / or trem would be available on any model. Just my opinion.

I've recently become a hardtail stratocaster fan, mainly for the tuning stability.
Anybody else strictly a hardtail fan?

I wish there was a MIM hardtail standard. I never use tremolo, I just block it....

Voodoo...Check out this link to see what the hardtail is lke for a string thru body set up on a Robert Cray. It's like the Tele set up..http://www.sweetwater.com/guitargallery/electric/all/sMSZ9312775/

I suppose what Fender did was to have a hardtail available as the MIM version of the Cray, as opposed to the MIA American Standard as had been historically. I expect that number reads..."Mexico Standard 2009".

The Custom Shop version is over 2.5K more. I've never seen the guitar on the weblink posted, on any dealer's wall. I did play the Custom Shop version at Manny's in NYC, well over ten years ago.

In general, on the discussion, many prefer the tone of the trem version, even with the trem block stopped......Clapton in particular.

If you think about it, you can get any model in a hard-tail. IMO, this is one of the strengths of the Fender Stratocaster. You can convert your floating bridge to hard tail with a screw-driver and a couple of springs. And if you want, swap it back later. With the bridge flush and the additional springs, that bridge is not going anywhere.
I am mainly a LP player, and stability is huge for me. In fact, I dont even think that the tremolo arm has ever actually been the bridge of my 08 MIA standard! Even if I had the option of a back loading hard tail for any model, I would never sacrifice the mass of the bridge block.

Thanks for the heads up on the long-windedness..I have been accused of that a time or two myself. I'll try to give you my thought and if you feel up to it, I appreciate your feedback.

I have many guitars with several different bridge configurations. The hard tails eg. Les Pauls (with stop tail piece & fixed bridges) sustain forever. The Strats (with synchronized trems) come next, and the Floyd Rose effects sustain the most.

If I understand correctly...(and I know that there are other contributing factors) but just speaking bridges...the fixed bridge absorbs the least amount of vibration from the strings, thus allowing the greatest amount of sustain. The floating bridges absorb the most amount of vibration thus hampering the string sustain.

This is partly why EC blocks his trem, hence reducing its ability to absorb vibration and take it away from string sustain. This seems to be physics more so than opinion, although opinion is all that I am attempting to discuss.

Remember that we are only discussing bridges, and only on solid body guitars. All things being equal...If we have two of the exact same solid body guitars...the fixed bridge version will always sustain longer.

Your input will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Noodles

Funny though, because my ESP with Floyd probably has more sustain than my Fixed bridge Ventura (Gibson Copy) and Strat. Not only that but it has the fattest chunkiest tone as well...maybe the neck thru has something to do with it, or the gobs of gain I use when playing that guitar

I have an 08 American Standard HSS. First I blocked the trem. Took that out and added 2 additional springs, essentially bottomed out the bridge action. Solved the tuning issues, and can now use 09 strings. This thing is now what I had aways thought a strat would be. I can not imagine a better palying guitar.
