That is totally a taste issue - you need to decide what sound you're going for and then research from there. The big three pickup brand selections will be (of course) Fender, DiMarzio and Seymour Duncan - there are others but those are the most popular, and Fender has used all three types in various models (especially artist models.) Do your research - each brand's web site gives descriptions and more importantly the artists who use them - use this as a way of figuring out what you want.

Another brand to check out is GFS - they don't get much attention but they have very good reviews on Harmony Central. I bought a set of Alnico II Premium Hand Beveled strat pickups was was very pleasantly surprised - and they were only about $70 for the whole set...

I would go with Fenders or GFS. I went with GFS on my strat based on reviews, and value.
I'm definitely impressed with them.

Asking "what kind of pups should I get?" or "what kind of guitar should I get?" is kinda ridiculous. It's like asking "what kind of woman should I marry?" or "what should I have for dinner?".

No one can tell you. It's too vague a question. It's all about personal taste and you're the only one who knows you're tastes. You have to do your own homework and try a bunch of different guitars. There's no way some dude on a message board is going to know the tone in your head that you're looking for.

There has to be some sort of tone you're aiming for. Check out what gear some of your favorite artists use. Thats a good starting point. There's too many variables. Humbucker vs. Single Coil? Bright tone vs. Dark? Vintage tone vs. Modern High Gain? Not knowing these things makes it almost impossible for someone here to give you any good advice.

Advice is a dangerous thing to give. Some guy tells you to buy a Classic Players strat and you do, then six months later you find it's not right for you. You trade it in for half what you paid for and get another guitar. You've lost a couple hundred bucks and wasted time.

Really, the best you can do is play as many guitars as you can, then choose.
