Use it very sparingly. You don't want it getting under the frets. A little goes a long way. Not only does it lube the wood, it cleans it as well. So your first swipes you'll be rubbing dirt off. Micro fiber cloths work well.

Yes. Putting too much on is not good, and anyone that's used it has done that before.

I usually put on just enough to wet it. Two seconds to run a stripe of it down the entire fretboard. I'll rub that in for a minute with my fingers. Almost massage it in like you would moisturizer on your skin. Let is set in for a minute, then wipe the rest off with a cotton rag. I only do this maybe three times a year.

Do it while changing strings when the strings are off.

I never have to clean my rosewood fret board. I wear gloves when I play.

At least, that's what my wife says it sounds like...

Treatment:

RW: A little bit of lemon/mineral oil that I bought in the health food store. I use it once or twice a year in the last three years and nothing negative to report about it.

Maple: Nothing due to the polyester and polyurethane finishes

Cleaning:

RW: moisten breath and old credit card if I need scraping (As per Dan Ellerwine)

Maple: same as RW

Hope that helps

D

WD-40 has always worked fine for me. Plus I prefer the smell to lemon oil.

Slapchop, thank you for reinforcing; lemons are not greasy or oily. Mineral oil is basically ultra-refined, filtered petroleum. You know, chemical-cousin to diesel fuel or motor oil.

One major ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil. 'Agree with Chet; y'really want that in your instrument's wood?

I use Gibson Luthier's Choice fretboard conditioner. " Replenish esessential oils in the fretboard, restores beauty to fine woods, prevents cracking and damage due to dryness, and reduces fingerboard drag." Use only on dark, non-finished woods(rosewood, ebony, pao ferro)
I have used it for years with excellent results. I have also read that Dan Erlewine uses raw linseed oil with good results. I never have, but Dan E. knows his stuff.
PS this is post # 666 Oh No!!!!! Time to go listen and jam to some Iron Maiden!!!

Paisely, modern research indicates the number was likely a code for the evil, persecuting Roman emperor(s) of the time. Be mellow. Listen to some Sharon Isben on classical guitar.

I asked my luthier about lemon oil for rosewood fingerboards. He said no. He recommended once a year bringing your guitar in and having him do it.

Call me a cynic, but he would say that wouldn't he!

Chet can you buy it at local stores or do you have to order it on line? Have you tried any of their other products and how do you like them?

Syeklops, Thanks I'll check out the local guitar center for some. Never bought guitar care products there, I go to a local mom and pop shop for those things so I never checked what GC had.
Thanks again,
filerj
