Hey all,

Been working on my MIM and installing the Clapton Midboost. Followed the wiring diagrams to a T and even took a look at the website that's been posted here as well. Put the guit back together and plugged in and nothing, no sound. Took her apart again this weekend and started trying to find the problem and anything I have tried doesn't work. Guitar is completely grounded because I get a reading on the OHM meter, however I can't get a reading on a volt meter. Doesn't look like there are any soldering joints touching or shorts anywhere. Has anyone else experienced this problem or have any ideas of what I am missing here? Any help is greatly appreciated.

-Will

Will, don't know just what your problem is but have you checked to see if your battery is truly good? and do you have the proper input jack and is it really wired correctly? The battery will not be active with the cord plugged in,and if the 3 wires to that jack are in the wrong spots you will be in the spot you describe.cheers,Craig

i thought about this and looked into it, but it appeared correct. No reason I can't take another look at it though. Thanks.

Appears to be something to do with the input jack. When i had it plugged in I got nothin..but as I was unplugging it I reached a point on the way out where i finally got noise out of the strings. I'm not sure what to make of this though... seemed like the tbx and midboost were unresponsive too. Still stumped :?

Hi Will. Ive wired a couple of boosts into my own guitar and can tell you now theres a few areas you need to look at.

1 when following the diagram, wire the pickups, pots, switch and jacksocket as per diagram but dont wire the boost, yet.
Wire the boost but dont try to follow colour coded wire. Work from the left wire to the right hand wire, ensuring they go to the right points.

2 put the TBX pot in the lowest position. This can (if your like me and get confused easily) cause wiring problems if you dont remember the TBX and MID pots are switched round. You need to get that pot out of the way of the circuit board.

3 when its all wired up and your confident its ok tap the pickups with a screwdriver, with the guitar plugged in but the pickguard not fixed down. You will hear a loud thunk from the amp when the pickup is properly active.

4 wrap the circuit board in something to sheild it a bit. Dont use metal tape. I use a small plastic bag.

All the best mate.

Oh yeah dont try and put the battery in the control cavity. It is just far too tight. I put it inbetween the springs in the trem cavity.

Reminder to the OP...if you're going to attempt to make a silk purse out of sow's ear you need to be the best of both worlds. Fortunately.....we have niki!

Thanks Niki, definitely something I will take a look at...unfortunately the niece and nephews will be running around house today so it'll have to go on the back burner for a couple days. I arranged for the battery to go between the springs and blocked the trem....just seemed like the easiest way to go. I tried the screwdriver bit and got nothing...which is where I was getting frustrated. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Doc, I think I may be out of the loop on the silk purse... but in any case if there are any sow's ears lyin around over here the yellow labs have already chewed them up

I know it's been ages since I first posted this, but I haven't had a chance to get back around to the project until now. I wanted to thank you guys for the help you gave and Niki, moving the TBX Pot back to the last position was a great idea.. didn't have to cram it in there like the last attempt.

Think the other source of the problem was when I looked in the case for the soldering iron I used... I found out it was 230 watts!! I'd like to open the old pots up and see what the inside looks like. In then end I bought another kit, new soldering iron and guitar plays great now. Thanks again for the help. And still waiting to hear about the story mentioned above ^^ .. :)

Take Care,

-Will

Hi Will, glad you got it all sorted. As far as I know it was Doc's idea to put the battery between the trem springs.

Rock that axe mate.
