Can't say I've ever seen a neck with a contoured heel. Every deluxe I've seen has the body contoured but not the neck.

Do you have pics of what you are looking for?

The only problem I can think of is the position of the upper left screw (as it is in the pic). I don't know if new necks are drilled or not, but a deluxe neck should be drilled non-symmetrically so as to fit the contoured pocket.

What Flanker said is right the contour is in the body not the neck if you are asking about the offset screw hole in the neck you can use any Stratocaster neck and just drill a hole for this offset screw as the body still covers the unused hole,my technique for drilling this hole is this, measure the depth of the existing holes with something like a rod or piece or wire and then measure the outside diameter of the threads find a drill bit that is 60 percent as large as that outside diameter that is 40 percent smaller.I then use a piece of tape on the drill bit as a "stop".I then mount the neck on the body and mark the location of the needed hole, then remove the neck and drill.cheers

Have a look at the Haggard set neck Tele. Of course, this is not possible with respect to the subject of the OP.

A wide necK??? Does that mean a flatter radius?? Beyond the existing width of the pocket is not possible as I see it.

Thats what I was thinking Doc, Whats a wider neck? I am guessing he meant fretboard radius. But who knows.

I never could understand why Fender did the funny neck screw on the Deluxe. It looks like they could have figured after CBS did the 3-screw that the regular old four screw (non-offset) was the way Fender players like their necks.

I could of had a new Deluxe, but didn't think a strat needs an S-1 tone switch. I hated the push button in the middle of the control knob. When I turned the Deluxe over and saw the funny neck plate and neck screw alignment, I was done.

AmStd for me. :)

[b][quote="stratoBobster"]I never could understand why ...........

The set neck guitars featured a contoured heel which permitted easier access to the upper frets. Fender added that to the the American Deluxe series in 2004, hence the need for the redesigned neck plate.

The S-1 switching system is self-explanatory, though you express the opinion that your tonal palate and requirements don't run to that.

Perhaps by wide neck he means wide at the nut, this gives a little extra string spacing room.
And although everyone is entitled to an opinion, the people that I hear complain about the non traditional aspects of a deluxe model makes me laugh. The contour heal is just great.I have 3 deluxe models and 4 traditional model with the standard square heal and really prefer the deluxe. And as for the S1 switch I like that better too you have a wide tonal options and how can that be a bad thing? Also I have never had a moment of trouble with this switch.cheers

Thank you for your reply and the very civilized way you expresed your points. :)

I did not know about the better playability that the neck heel provided. I will have to run up the neck on a Deluxe and check that out.

My issue with the S-1 is more in the delivery. The button inside a knob just looked like something that could give me a problem at the wrong time. That with my view that any garden variety strat give a great tonal range without the extra wiring. I will admitt that when I was looking for stats, I didn't know the S-1 does not use a battery. That is a plus as far as I am concerned.

I do love the abalone position markers on Deluxe strats.

Specs will give you the combinations in the various switching positions. The best would be to audition the guitar somewhere through a Fender tube amp.

You are right, I should have sat down and played a Deluxe thru a good tube amp long ago. GC offered me a very nice Deluxe Strat for a Les Paul of mine on a straight up deal. The Deluxe was beautiful and I probably should have given it more consideration. I ended up with two 2004 American Standard hardtails instead.

Thats awsome, thanks for all the input, Iv'e been playing for a long time but just recently got into building and upgrading parts for my guitar, I think Im getting one with a wider nut so I have more string spacing. I like to play alot of david gilmour does anyone know what size frets he uses? I just feel really cramped playing my neck and want all the room i can get. Should I go with warmoth.com?
