we're just redoing the garage into a nice practise area for my band and i was wondering where and how to keep my guitars. i wanna hang em up on the wall for display and easy access, but i know keeping them in cases will protect them more.

any ideas

thanks 8)

bendsnlicks,

My suggestion is to do both. I would hang wall mounts in the garage for when you practice, and store them in cases in the house when not using them. Most garages’ environments are not as controlled as inside a house. The temperature extremes and humidity (either too much or not enough) could possibly wreak havoc of your guitar/equipment.

I imagine a garage would be more prone to break in and theft. Keep the guitars in the house. Why not take some nice photos of your guitars and frame them on the wall in the garage. That way you can still show them off.....

I wouldn't hang them in a garage, that is going to cause problems as the weather changes as said.

Hello Bendsnlicks,

My guitars are in hardshell cases
they're proteced and dust free,
when not being used.

Friends who have some nice displays
do spend some time keeping the dust at bay.

Cheers.

Best advice heard personally is, never leave your guitar anywhere your normally-clothed body would not be comfortable.

All my guitars get hung up, cept the hotrod. It has a very thin finish and goes back in the case when its done with. Just becuase its so thin a finish it suffers paint sink from new.

Hanging seems better for the guitar longterm. Gravity pulling the thing will act to keep the neck straight. Just the same as standing it up face leaning in did, as everyone used to do. Pressure acting against the heel/string tension, rather than for it.

Not storing your guitar anywhere you wouldnt feel comfortable fully clothed, sounds like the best way of thinking about it, to me. You wont go far wrong thinking like that about it.

With respect, that's all a myth. Gravity ain't gonna do anything if a piece of hardwood decides it's time to get warping.

In the case, with a little silica gel sack.

All my guitars except #1 are in there cases.#1 is usually in a gig bag, against the wall or on top of an amp.But the bottom line is it is always out. I dont like hangers for one reason. I went to get a switch changed on a Tele years back and my friend who owned the shop talked me into trying a 4 way switch that he was getting in so I would have to pick the guitar up before closing. Well when I walked in I knew something was wrong because when he saw me he turned white and walked behind the counter. Then started saying how sorry he was and he would buy the guitar from me. What happened was after he put the switch in he hung it on the top row and the hanger pulled and the guitar fell and a big chunk came out of the body. Well being he was a good friend and the store was doing so bad I worked it out with him that he would do work for free when I needed it and I put a big decal over the damage. Now if this was a chain store they would of just bought a guitar but his friendship meant a lot and he was down at the time. So I never had a guitar of mine go on a hangar again.
