Hi I am interested in purchasing a used 2008/9, 1962 Vintage Hot Rod Stratocaster. The seller claims its a hot rod. How can I be certain its not just a Vintage (not that there is anything wrong with that). The guitar is brand new practically, and none of the hang tags are with it. Ser# V169764

It has the 5-position switch only, he claims there never was a 3-way installed. But then it has an ash tray cover, dont know if the HR came with one or not. Looking at the Sam Ash instrument retailer website, I cannot tell.

Also would $1240 be a fair price to offer?

Many thanks!

$1200 seems about the right money for a used hotrod. The V prefix on the serial no' is correct also dont be deterred by that. I dont know about the ashtray cover, my 57 hotrod didnt come with one but that proves nothing. The guy could have bought it seperately.
Go see the guitar look for a very thick and flat neck. Also check the paint, it should be really thin. Lots of hotrod owners myself included can see a body joint through the paint if the guitar is tilted.

Other than that theres not much i can tell you mate. look to that neck, thats the main thing.

Hello WilliamHilow,

I'm the owner of a '62 Hotrod in Olympic white.
5 position switch is correct, they never had a 3.
Very substantial neck, 9.5 radius, med/jumbo frets
No bridge cover included, brown case orange interior.
Electrickery under the pickguard is unique to this model.

I like mine, lots.

Cheers.

Wrap your fingers around the neck, if your first thought is WTF? then it's a Hot Rod.
