You guy'$@!& Skynard's guitar players without mentioning their most recent killer Strat playing Mark Matejka, who joined the band in 2006. Although all of their guitar players through the years have been great, this guy really takes the cake. IMO he is the most stylish player that they have ever had!

What's this dude been smokin'?..time to put it down.
I agree...I mean who is left on stage after Billy Powell and Leon died,of the band? Gary R. is the only original member left still playing under the band's name, and several years ago I read where there had to be at least 4 original members still playing to call it Skynyrd.
I saw that guy's (Matejka) picture in an add and thought what version of the band exists now that can really be compared to LS when Ronnie was alive?
I know Ed is still alive and Artimus is,I think, and they ain't there now.Rick Medlocke played with them early on.
It ain't the same band.
Funny thing about LS and RVZ...a guy who was around them in the studio said one time he saw them and they had busted lips and black eyes and he said you could tell they had been in a big fight...then he found out they had been fighting each other!
The guy who told me that was Paul Davis,a great musician and singer,RIP,and he was surprised that they would fight and then work together.

Definitely, if anything the guy he mentioned might be 5th on the list.

RVZ was such an incredible singer, There never will be anyone who can match his stage presence and vocals.

As far as the fighting, I bet it was over trying to get some of the others to kick the hard drug habits 'cause they knew it could end badly and I'm sure these guys loved each other like brothers. I wonder if this was around the time that "That Smell" was written? What a song that is.
I wish I was there to see their faces when Steve Gaines walked in to audition, I've read that they were all blown away. I'm sure they were.

I don't remember if Paul told me when it was he saw them like that, but I think it was in Muscle Shoals, that was awhile back.
He said he liked Ronnie, and also that they did act like brothers...that would explain the fighting and being able to still work together like family.

I would say it is and Ovation.

So....do I win?

That's not Ronnie Van Zant. Look at the drummer also, that's the new LS not the old LS. I was talking Ronnie, not Johnny. I'm still waiting for proof if you have it please show me, thank you. Just like the guy mentioned earlier I believe I had read that RVZ did not play guitar. You can't go by an interview in a magazine. Many times writers are full of it. Cheers!

That photo looks like Donnie, not Ronnie.

I didn't say it was Ronnie, I said it was Mr. Van Zant.

You are correct, that is Donnie Van Zant in front of his band 38 special.

Ive seen LS in the 70s so many times. I think they were one of the greatest american bands ever. Steve Gaines was one great guitar player. The three of them back then where great.

Right on bro! I did not know that was 38 Special! (Another great southern rock band!). Johnny is the singer with LS now. LS is still a great band these days as well. I got them on DVD but I've only seen LS live back in the mid 70s or so. I saw the tour they were doing when they had come out with the "One from the road," record. I love rock, blues, some country and soul, funk, jazz and alot of 50s and 60s pop stuff. Music is a wonderful form of art and entertainment. Thanks for sharing!

According to Judy Vanzant's LS history website he could, he just liked being full time frontman better.

Since we're discussing Ronnie.....
I'm sure y'all heard about the grave vandalism of Ronnie's vault a couple of years ago...I read where they broke into the back of the mausoleum and drug his casket out but didn't get it open.
The family reburied him somewhere else.......what a shame.

That's awful. There are some bad people in the world. They should leave his remains in peace. More than likely, they wanted anything of value buried with him. How would they be able to market something like that evades me. Grave robbers are creepy.
