i went to the GC over the weekend and saw a $99 2 tone sunburst squire bullet. after looking over the guitar i saw that the neck joint was pretty tight and the black paint didn't go all the way over the body contour. i love the color and the body seems to be nice and heavy. since the body is so nice i thaught that i could get a new neck, pickups, a big block, ect.
and make a nice guitar out of it. what pickups would you guys suggest for a heavy classic rock tone?

i am not a fan of squires. i knew one guy that fixed his up and he liked it. but my main concern are the fretts. on squires they tend to bend very easily. refretting a guitar can cost a lot of money so i would have recommended that you get a mexican standard if you wanted to build off of it. a squire would not be a good idea.

Sometimes buying an el-cheapo to hot rod costs you more than just buying a better guitar.

It may cost you just as much, but you can end up with something really custom, which can be fun.
Also, you can upgrade it over time so you don't have to put out a lot of cash right away.

I WAS going to do exactly that, but ended up getting a nice Mexican strat instead. I still can't help but tinker with it however, so i'm already spending extra money on pickups.

Depending on what sound you want, it's hard to recommend anything specific. I'm liking the Dimarzio Area '58 and Area '61 combination so far.

I've got a Squier that's almost 10 years old, "crafted in China." Quality's good on it. May have a couple extra touches from the custom shop because a friend of a friend of a friend worked there and he sold it to her. Damn pickups sound great in that little Squier, especially the neck one with a really great Vaughn sound. I've always suspected there's a hot rod pickup in the neck. Overall, I used the heck out of that guitar and it came to be holding me back some. Bridge doesn't float. The action's too high and only can be corrected by the truss rod, but that's not too bad for bending under and also you can switch back and forth easily to acoustic. I'm going to give it to one of my kids some day.

Either a bone stock Squier Stratocaster neck pickup that sounds remarkably good, or a friend of a friend of a friend through who I bought the guitar indirectly at an employee price dropped something better in it like Texas Special. I don't know how to tell and all in all it's not that crucial to me. I play my Highway One all the time now.
