Hello everyone. This is my firs post

I don't know very much about Strat's and I'm looking for one. I've found a Fender California series for about $480 with case. The price sound good to me, but I need some advice..

What's a fair price for one of this guitars?
And more importantly are they good?

Here are some pics:

Welcome to the Forum. Links to the pics did not work. That is a good price if the guitar and case are in good condition.

Seems like a fair price to me. The California series was only made in 1997-1998. I have seen people ask for more than $500 for them because of their rarity. Also, if you are not in the United States, the guitar is probably more expensive. I do not think it is a bad price at all.

A friend of mine in Oregon has several of them and loves how they feel and play. He's been paying about that much, so it seems fair to me.

So are they good?

How it does compare with an american Strat?

It's must be better than a mexican strat rigth?

I am going to get slammed for this one, but in my opinion is is the forerunner for the orginal Highway 1. It is a great no frills guitar. The one in your pic does say it is a MIA guitar. It looks good (pics are a little fuzzy) but in decent condition.

In my honest opinion the Made in ___ thing does not bother me as it once did. I have played good and bad guitars that were Made In ____. If you can, play it and see what your hands/ears tell you. Country of origin should not be a deciding factor.

And as mentioned, it is a good price for a guitar with a HSC.

Dito to what Mr. Reisher has said. The California series was Fender's attempt to make a low cost, U.S. guitar to bridge the price gap between the MIM guitars and the American made guitars. The California series was only available between 1997 and 1998, and was subsequently replaced by the Highway 1 model. The California series necks and bodies were shaped in the United States (Corona facility) and then shipped to the Ensenada Mexico facility for painting. They were then returned to Corona for final assembly. People liked the California series because they had features similar to the vintage guitars. Specifically, the 21 fret neck, 6 screw tremolo, the "tex Mex" pickups and (look at your own picture) the vintage Kluson style tuners.

Are they better than the MIM strats? The MIM guitars are actually very high quality. People are too hung up on where the guitar is made, and fail to notice the quality. The Japanese Fender strats, in my opinion, are better than the U.S. made guitars (save for the Custom Shop). If you want my opinion, they are the SAME as the made in Mexico guitars. For a while, the necks on the MIM guitars were actually made and shaped in the U.S. Corona facility.

Years ago I searched long and hard for one because of their reputation as being high quality guitars at a reasonable price, but never found one. This post piqued my curiousity -- there are only two listed on eBay.

BTW - The originals came with a gig bag so the HSC is a plus. Go for it!

I thought that the California series were supposed to have a US made neck. The one pictured looks like a Mex neck (wood around truss rod hole). :?
