Hi everyone!!

I just bought this lefty body on eBay, stated as an American Fender strat body from 1976/77...(badly refinished by the way)

http://imagehost.vendio.com/bin/view...8RILHbody4.JPG

By looking at the neck pocket I saw that the shape is not "circular" (sorry, english is not my mother thongue ). Searching on the net I found that Fender "Smith" strats from the 80's had the same neck pocket shape ( http://homepage.mac.com/skylabfilmpop/smith/smith_a.jpg )

Noticed also in the pots cavity the small "hole" with a screw...

But the Smith stat does not have 3 bolt neck....

Please help!!!!

Regards,

Alex

I cannot see the picture of the body you put in your post. The message I get is:

Welcome.

It looks like a typical 70s Fender body where someone did several hideous modifications to it.

Good luck with it, there is a lot of work which has to be done on it for it to be properly usable again.

thanks for answering!!

What do you think should be done on the guitar? (i don't mind leaving the extra cavities the way they are as the pickguard will hide)

Here, let me put it into the thread for you.
Image

It appears to be a genuine Fender body from the late 1970's, though it has been routed and repainted. It appears to be from the late 1970's or early 1980's. The early 1970's Strats featured a 'square' cut on the pickup routing. I have a 1974 strat but I am just not in the mood to take it apart to take photos

Image

The early 1970's strats have 'square' cut for the single coil pickups. This was only made in the early to late 1970's

Yours is a late 70's, early 80's body because when you look at the routing for the three pickups it is a 'round' shape, and because it has a ground in the front of the guitar. In the mid 1970's fender routed the pickups in the body with a 'round shape'. And in late 1979 and the early 80's the three bolts also featured a ground in the front. The only manufacturer that did this was Fender. I have never seen any maker of copy guitars do a front ground. This is a picture I found of the front ground that I am talking about:

If you are thinking that it looks like a "smith strat" it is because it is. This is the time period when Fender was trying to go back to make the strats in the traditional way. They still had used parts from the 1970's that they were trying to use up.

In any event, if your question is whether it is a legitimate fender strat body, yes, it is.

You're welcome.

At the very least, have those screw holes for joining the neck to the body professionally corrected for a 4 bolt system or professionally restored for a 3 bolt system by a competent tech. (I strongly recommend a 4 bolt system.)
