OK, here's the deal;

My dad bought a really cheap strat that was built by Epiphone in probably the eighties, and it belongs to me now. It tunes real badly, the pickups are real weak, and the tremolo system rattles when I play. Anybody have one of these clunkers?

I've seen a couple before, they didn't impress me none. Just another company trying to cash in on the strat craze.

I don't have anything against epiphone except for their solid body guitars. With epiphone you just never know what lies under the paint.

hey is it the guitar that kurt cobain sometimes played? cause i remember seeing him with something that seems to fit your description.

i have a epi acoustic (100$) and it's not bad (the action is a little high though).

i say i you've got the money just go for a gibson (i did) the les paul vintage mahogany is a steal at 750.00 usa$ and sound better than most of the pricier gibsons. :D

I have a 2006 Epiphone SG made at the only 'Epiphone-only guitars' plant in Asia (QingDao - China) and its a great guitar. The earlier ones had build quality issues but these EE serial ones are great.

Nothing beats a Strat though!!!

OK, first, I also have a Les Paul standard from Epiphone, and I love it, and secondly, I don't know if it was like what Kurt Cobain played. I'll have to look into it, though... and lastly, if I had the money for a Gibson, I would, BUT, I'm saving up for my first Strat.

We get those through our shop after I set em up they play better but not great
You would not believe all the strat clones I get to abuse on a dailey basis
if fender turned out stuff like this
the would have been out of business long ago.
I can make em play but they don't stay together for more than a year (cheap parts)

Do you reccomend customizing it to my liking, if I have the money?

If you're going to replace the pickups there are tons of options - but a good option for hardware is Callahamguitars.com - they make all types of high quality parts for strats and a lot that will retrofit imports. You can also check Ebay for all types of hardware; just make sure to check if your exisiting Epi hardware is metric or standard before jumping on something...

I've got an Epiphone strat. Bought it on Ebay, I think for $80. First thing I did was buy a loaded pickguard with Fender Am. Standard pickups and drop it in. (It cost as much as the guitar.) But now it sounds great and it is a good looking, nice playing guitar. Mine is an 80's Korean model.

I also owned a newer made-in-China model for a short time but sold it off. It just didn't have the same quality feel.
